    m50 build questions

    Hey guys -
so I am OFFICIALLY the proud owner of a 91 318i. Bought it last week in C-ville VA for $1200. It has plastic bumpers, an m42 swap, chip, exhaust, and 16s with fresh yokohama rubber. I love thing with a passion, and as soon as I get the power cord to my computer (I left it in belgium when I came home last week and my roomate is sending it to me) I'll post pictures
Now, the fun stuff. I ALSO purchased a NV m50 last week with forged pistons. The motor was completely torn down for a rebuild when the guy decided to sell it because he had to move. Its in a million pieces and this will be my first engine build. I am planning on running a Holset hx-35 with 7-8 lbs of boost, aiming for around 320 whp, somewhere in there. While I am a novice to actually building motors, I would consider myself technically competent and definitely a quick learner. I searched for build guides but came back without anything or real relevance. Can you vetrans point me in the right direction, or if you have any helpful tips for resources I can use to start reading up on how to begin this project?
    Appreciate it!

Where do you live? I actually have that almost exact setup in my car right now. i live in Fairfax. I think that was a motor I was going to grab from a friend that moved. Whered you get it from?

how do you plan to do all the fab work?

    Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

Seems like a lot of VA guys that have recently done or completed swaps. I live in Harrisonburg and am swapping an obd1 m52 into my 325is. I'm finally finishing up the damn thing! We should all get together at some point.

hahah wow - actually I live in oakton normally but ill be doing the build up here in MD since I work up here in the summer. The fab work is hopefully gonna be done by a local shop up here by my dads house, unless you have a better recommendation for a shop down there in ffx.

annnd I go to JMU, so I'm in harrisonburg the rest of the time :)

I don't know a good shop to do it. I do all my fab work myself or pay friends to do it. And it shows lol.

          GL with it man!

You are going to have a lot of work ahead of you. To be honest. Find a complete motor.

Something in the 2.8 range if you are on a budget.

Was the blocked honed? Bored? What Size are the pistons? +1? What is going down with the crank? Did it come with shells? Are the cam towers new? Cams? Timing chains come with it?

A top end and bottom end gasket set is going to set you back a couple hundred (250 + 100 ish).

i think its been honed already, pistons will fit without issue, stock crank in good shape, dunno about the cam towers - swapping intake and exit cam, getting a new intake cam, yes timing chains. its a complete engine. I have the stock gaskets but im getting newer ones anyways

alright, so I've been doing massive amounts of research the past 3 days to try and decide on a final setup.
                        gtrg 260 w/e36 5spd ds and either a 3.15 or 3.25 lsd
the block is being honed in the next 2 weeks, then assembly will begin.

now, I have been reading a lot about cams, trying to decide on the best set up for a turbo application. I know you can swap the intake cam to the exit side and run several diff intake cams in its place, the schrick (too expensive for me), and i believe an s50 cam, or another m50 intake cam. Are there any other possibilities? Which would be the best for me?

also, I'm still learning about compressor maps, and after reviewing the hx35 Im thinkin perhaps its not the best snail for my goals. If my motor is around 8:9:1 and I'm aiming to achieve somewhere around 300-350 whp, any suggestions for which turbo I should be lookin into?
