e36 CIA on an e30?

Well the 3.5's come on 540I... just thought maybe there was a CIA for them or something that had a CARB sticker

It carb sticker Would say its for a 540 and you woulnt pass because they Know you don't have a V-8. Get the one for the E36 that's that's for whatever year your cars motors is going to ref'd at.

The guy shouldn't check you part number on the afm to see if its differnet .
Just get the 3.5 with a stock apearing elbow or a new one and stretch it. And make your own filter side pipe and run it out under the car with a k&n and you should be good to go. Or keep a stock afm and a shit to swap out.
