my question is how much difference is the s50 swap into a 318 e30 than a 325 e30. as far as all the parts being different like the ecu and wiring.is more difficult or involed than a car that already came with a 6cyl. will the fuel pumps have to be changed. point is i may be doing a s50 swap into an e30 if i dont sell my m3 soon and i was wondering what model i should be looking to buy as i have found a few 318s and clean 325 cars are a little harder to get as far as price point. thanks.

It'll be harder on an 84-85 model 318 or 325 because they use a rectangular style C101 fuse box connector so using a plug n play Treehouse or similar adapter isn't going to work without first converting to the later circular type. Other than this, I don't see any difference as most things will get changed anyway."I'd probably take the E30 M3 in this case just because I love that little car, and how tanky that inline 6 is." - thecj

the late style facelift car is a little easier. newer style radiator is a direct replacement. the m42 cars have the right throttle cable but only have a single outlet for the exhaust out the rear valance. i prefer the look of cars with plastic bumpers anyway.sigpic

I was planning on finding a small bumper car as I was not looking forward to hunting down a set of small bumpers and having to fab anything.I was just wondering overall because I did not want to run into any unforseen issues if I found a small bumper 318.when you say plug and play tree house adapter for the fuse box what exactly is available to me for the swap that will make my life easier when it comes to the wiring harness and other wiring. I read on a thread that there were just a couple of wires to splice on the engine that has to do with said c101 connectorand that was it because the ecu would be used completely as its all inclosed. [22. the engine harness and the ECU are all E36 M3.
On the standard E30 with M20 engine fitted, you have the large round plug (C101) up on the firewall next to the brake booster.
This plug has 2 parts. One half is connected to the car wiring, and the other is connected to the engine harness.
When the M20 was removed, the engine side of the plug was removed with the engine. Now I have the S50 half of the plug in its place. Although similar in appearance, it will not plug directly into the E30 half of the plug.
I removed the E36 engine half of the plug, and replaced it with an E30 one. This then allows the 2 parts to screw back together. All you need to make sure is that you have the correct wires connected to each other. Its not just pin 1 to pin 1 and pin 2 to pin 2 etc (although some of the wires do actually connect this way).
This plug connection is the only point where the E30 & E36 wiring interface with each other. The rest of the E36 M3 engine harness is totally self contained.]
