    Car smells at WOT

After getting on it my car smells. I dont really know how to describe the smell but it is pretty foul. Much worse when the windows are down but you can smell it when the windows are up. Would not having a charcoal canister have anything to do with it?

      have a magnaflow cat.

Would this be related to the charcoal evap canister or is this probably from some kind of exhaust leak?

Does it smell like fuel? If not, I don't see why you'd think it's the charcoal canister. Not having one means you either plugged the tank hose or left it open. If you didn't plug it, and it does smell like fuel, you've probably found your problem. But fuel isn't "foul"...

Does it smell like rotten eggs? That's usually a clogged or damaged cat. How many miles are on it?

Is anything leaking? ATF doesn't exactly smell pleasant when it's burning (dripping onto exhaust...)

The entire exhaust system has maybe 3000 miles on it. No fluid leaking on the exhaust side that I am aware of. It does somewhat smell like sulfur but I wouldnt say as strong as rotten eggs.

If it smells like sulfur, it's probably coming from the exhaust.

Is your oxygen sensor functioning properly? Have you had a sniffer test recently for emissions (I'm not familiar with your state emissions laws)?

It could either be from running rich, or your cat may be bad.

Do you have any check engine lights or anything, any other issues with the car?

car threw a code for the hfm so have a new one on the way.

The o2 sensor seems to be functioning, not getting any codes for it.

We dont have emissions testing here in VA.

It definitely is coming from the exhaust side of the car, I just dont know why. I dont think the cat is bad either.

                What makes you think that?

Is it just a universal Magnaflow?

Maybe your HFM is messing with the mixture. Get that fixed and see what it does.

Yea its just a universal. I am hoping the hfm will fix the issue, wait and see.

Did you try cleaning the HFM? Cone filter oil tends to cause havoc with HFM's.

That's not normal. They didn't smell it e36's and e34's, they shouldn't smell in e30's, nothing has changed. If it's a noticeable smell, something is wrong.

Is any part of the exhaust system(headers, cat, or muffler) brand new? Sometimes the paint, stickers, or coatings smell really bad when they are heated up, ie when you are wot.
