i have the opurtunity to possibly buy a dirt cheap rust free body from a friend and a wrecked 328i. what is an estimated time to have the m52 swapped and running if i start with all the necessary swap items and just go at it to do a basic swap. any big hazards to watch out for? i realize this is a hard thing to pin down but barring any huge delays about how long could one expect? i will do more research prior to the swap but i would like to know if this is even worth pursuing.

It took me 4 days, but it wouldn't start because of a faulty c101 connector (corroded pins), which took another 7 days to track down and repair.
I used the getrag 260, so I had to make a brace and modify the shift linkage. I also used an e21 booster, and had to cut/re-thread the shaft. Long story short, I spent an entire day, maybe more, messing with this stuff.
You can do all of this stuff ahead of time if you buy extra parts to work on. Then you could do the swap in 2 days if you don't hit any snags.
It took me 6 months of planning to do it in a long weekend. BUT, I was able to do it with no problems, every single part I needed - I had.

I hope you're joking. See my sticky thread at the top of this forum.

How mine worked out--
Friday- 5-7: Pulled G260, M20, and cooling system. Removed P/S stuff.
Saturday- 1-5: Prepped/cleaned engine bay. Converted engine sensors to OBD-1 and added exhaust manifolds, water pump, pulleys, coils, and belt. Modified motor mount to work with headers.
Sunday- 1-3: Modified engine harness and watched TV at home.
Next Saturday- 2-7: Dropped motor in. Shimmed as needed for fitment. Installed wiring harness. Modified firewall to accept the harness. Figured out what cooling system hoses I needed and installed M42 radiator. Added filter and oil. Used trigger starter to turn engine over to build oil pressure. Installed transmission, shift linkage, and driveshaft.
Sunday- 3-5: Added intake manifold, vacuum hoses, MAF, and throttle cable. Ran car for first time. Bled cooling system. Drove car for first time with S52. Called Mitch M while driving around with open headers.
Basically that was it. Total of 15 or so hours. Not including all of the research time (tons), electrical trouble shooting to fix coolant temp gauge reading (gauge was faulty), or the time it took to fab up an exhaust. That's a lot of time now that I look back..
