The MikeE30 support team thread. Q and A

Ok. So I want to help get this sorted out. However I am way too lazy to read all of the info all over. So please answer my questions.

    OBD1 or 2?

    M50 Manifold?

What vacuum system parts are you missing?

Do you have a limiter for that vanos for the sunbelts?

Does it hold an idle intermittently?

Which parts in the intake system are new? MAF, O2, TPS, IAC

The funny sound your tranny / block. - Have you checked it with a stethoscope?

Have you done the brake parts cleaner vacuum test yet?

    Please advise.

Its not about reading. Its about asking the right questions. Have some support for your fellow R3v buddies.

The reason I don't like taking all the info from some original threads is that shit changes, parts break and get replaced. Diagnosis happens. It sounds like he has a odd vacuum leak that might involve a bad TPS which is making the ECU think that the MAF is dead.

Sounds like the OBD1 manifold conversion did not take. There is a lot of variables.

Thats what I think as well. But I understand his concerns about the noise coming from the bellhousing.

The vacuum leak should be the second thing on his list after that then the tps.

Why wouldnt it? Its a common swap.

Mistakes happen. I would start with the vacuum leak. Vacuum related issues can do really funny things.

Im not sure on the TB.

                        LOL @ this thread!! I <3 r3v.

I worked late today so I can have off tomorrow. I will be taking care of a thing or two I have to get done in the morning, then all day tomorrow and all day saturday will be devoted to the bitch.

stroker is right, tranny issue first, then vacuum leak. I'm going to pull it off tomorrow and check things out. Not exactly going to be fun but don't have a choice.

Regarding the vacuum leak I'm thinking 2 things. 1 - I may have messed up the hose routing. or more likely 2 - I still don't really know what a pcv (i guess pressue control valve?) is and I don't have one of those or an air/oil seperator (this part is obd2, does it also do whatever the pcv does in addition to the nifty air/oil seperation?) installed.

                          OBD1 or 2? OBD2

M50 Manifold? YES. And m50 throttle body with whatever TPS that came on it. Coolant bypassed and charcoal canister inlet capped off.

What vacuum system parts are you missing? I believe a pcv that everyone mentions and/or an oil/air seperator if it's interchangable. That's it to my knowlege.

Do you have a limiter for that vanos for the sunbelts? Vanos was rebuilt and modified with a limiter by VAC Motorsports... the motherfucker already rattles with 30 miles on it

Does it hold an idle intermittently? Yes, it will hold an idle more often than not. After throttle input, the return back down to idle is slow and that is also when it likes to stall.

Which parts in the intake system are new? MAF, O2, TPS, IAC Porsche Bosch 803 3.5" HFM and both pre-cat o2 sensors. All TB and intake mani gaskets/seals are new (everywhere on the motor too for that matter). Regarding ignition, all spark plugs are also new. TPS and IAC are used.

The funny sound your tranny / block. - Have you checked it with a stethoscope?
Yes, but still difficult to diagnose EXACT location. I am pretty confident it is tranny related. Will see if I'm right tomorrow.

Have you done the brake parts cleaner vacuum test yet?
Will also be doing this tomorrow before removing the transmission for visual inspection. Want to eliminate bad seals/connections as the source of vacuum. That will leave me with either a missing check valve of some sort or improper hose routing as the culprit.
                          Please advise.
Sheesh. Think that answers it. Not gonna lie, I feel loved. :)

First question from me: Was I supposed to put some sort of felt ring and covering plate on the pilot bearing? Found 2 of these in a little baggie - 11-21-1-744-345. I looked it up on real oem, I'm 99.9% sure I bought a felt ring of some sort somewhere along the line.

3 bolts away from getting this stupid tranny off. Going to turn this negative into a positive, and make sure everything is right and then fix the little things that I didn't do and wouldn't have done for a LONG time - such as PERFECTLY center my shifter instead of centering it enough to just be ok with it. Might as well make it so that I'm perfectly happy with it this time around...

You don't need the felt ring or dust plate, but put it in if you have the tranny out. It's just to help keep dust/dirt/oil away from that bearing from what I understand. I don't have them in either of my cars, but neither of my cars are as valuable as your engine alone :)
