    Another heating issue

    Hi guys,
I recently bought an 87 320 with an M50B25 swapped in. The swap is well done, the guy who did it knows lots about these swaps and used to have an E36 M3 3.0 in there.

My problem is that when I drove on the highway at 70+ mph, the temp on the gauge is under the halway mark even though it had warmed up to half way before the highway. I didn't have heat in the cabin until I got into trafic and the guage temp went up.
So I read lots of threads here and decided to change the thermostat and bleed the system. I bout an 88C tstat, but the old one was 80C, decided to change it anyways. Now the engine heats up to halfway faster at idle, but goes over halfway, up to the next line (3/4?) but doesn't go near the red line. I don't like this temp range, but i'm not sure how accurate the gauge is. It didn't solve the cabin temp, and on the highway, the gauge shows a tiny bit over halfway, then rises a bit in the city. I did find an interesting thing though - if I turn the temp circle all the way to Cold for a few seconds, then turn to Hot, it does heat, but only for about ten seconds then goes luke warm. This leads me to think there may be a duovalve like in my Merc. They cause various cabin temp problems. Do you think I have one in there somewhere? Could this be causing it? Should I put the 80C tstat back?
The radiator is a Behr M435 (hope I got those numbers right), it has a two speed aux fan, no viscous fan.

I've read about 30 threads on this issue and I'm really starting to think that the in/out hoses to the core are installed wrong, I'll check tomorrow, though the guy who did the swap said he wouldn't have installed them wrong.
How hard is it to swap them? I tried feeling around in there today and I couldn't feel any rings that hold them in place. Will I have to take the intake off?
Could this also be causind the higher engine temp? Though I drove home between the last post and the temp stayed slightly above half way even when I was parking.

So it seems that they really are swapped wrong, but I have no idea how they hold on there. The connection is "hidden" but I can feel that the hose is on a tube in there. How are they held in place? Would anyone happen to have pics?

        * The "spider" hose connects to the TOP heater core pipe out of the firewall in the engine bay.

        * The coolant hose from the back of the cylinder-head connects to the BOTTOM heater core pipe out of the firewall in the engine bay.

If that was reversed, The heater will not functions very well i.e. it gets cold anytime the car is at higher RPMs.

          Here's how it should be.

You would think based on the diagram that you should have the hose from the back of the head onto the top inlet of the heater core, this in fact is wrong.

The spider hose (hose from the oil filter housing) goes to the top (t section) and the back of the head goes to the bottom.

Thanks a lot for the pics!
Would you happen to know how the hoses are held to the firewall pipes? Cause I can't imagine any rings in there, nor hetting a screwdriver in to loosen them.

Small C- clamps with (-) flat head screw as a fastener.

                Took some pics:
in the first you can see the fastener burried way in the heat insulation

and in the next you can sort of see that the bottom hose goes to the front of the car, an the top goes behind the head

                  Yours look like worm clamps.
You may have the option of a flat, a Phillips screwdriver, or possibly 7MM Socket.

Your cold cabin problem is either reversed hoses, or a failed heater valve.
It also could be a clogged heater core matrix.

I have been having this problem too. But I think it is the heater valve because if I keep my cabin temp adjuster to cold for a few days, then turn it to hot immediately, hot air will escape for only a few seconds until it gradually gets colder and stays cold.

Is that your case fusion? I dont know if that would explain your 3/4 mark temp issue though unless the gauge is still reading for e21 motor temp though. WHy dont you call the guy who sold the car to you?
