    Oil Pump Nut

    I know that this is on the list of items that must be addressed with these 24V motors, but I wanted to know what are the symptoms of an oil pump nut that is perhaps coming loose...

    When I was building this motor I used some red loctite to keep the nut in place. I'm just curious if there's anything to look out for b/c I'm getting a bit paranoid :)

      Well, it'll fall off and you'll have a sudden drop in oil pressure, possibly followed by the block making some self-lightening mods. Red loctite should be good enough, but drilling a hole through the shaft and safety-wiring it would be better, that or tack-welding the nut in place, since nothing beats a physical barrier to the nut backing off.

          It's a scary situation that has happened to a lot of the e36 track guys. Nut comes off and bye bye motor! :crazy:

            Yeh that would suck since so much time and money has been spent!!

            When I have the balls to drop the oil pan again, I'll put some JB weld on it since I don't have a welder or much less have the skill haha...

              do not put JB weld on it, red loctite, a drilled safety wired nut (bimmerworld sells them already done) or just a quick sizzle with a welder. It mainly happens on track cars that are really beat on and I havent heard it happen on a street car. I just locktited mine but I wish I had the welder then so I wouldnt have to even question it.

                  I wouldn't trust Lok-Tite myself but if you want to leave the fate of your engine to some red glue go for it.

                    well this dude tracked the car quite often, as the others have stated it normally happens on tracked cars. having said that, when i have the time, i'll drop the oil pan and get it welded or get the safety wire.

                    i wish the oil pan was a two piece design like the m42...

                      I used loctite on mine... no saftey wire, not welded. I'm not worried about it. It would be a great excuse to put something faster in there.

                          I would not trust Locktite in this application. I'd be concerned that the oil would cause the LockTite to deteriorate. Safety wire is the best solution as it is easily reversed during future work on the bottom end. All you need for that is a nut drilled for safety wire and some wire. no special tools required.

                            for the time being i won't touch it. i don't drive the car very hard and it hasn't seen any track days yet. i'll tackle this in the summer.
