yea fill the motor with oil/flywhee/etc. Really is something you should do before buying a motor.

You can guess general health without it or do a 100% rebuild but thats more costly in the long run imo.

    Status: HG repair. 488wtq though!

You'll need to bolt a g'box to it to turn it over too.

Looks like a B25 to me, I would pull the head off and inspect the bores/faces before buying anything!

Hindsight is always 20/20. This was the first time I bought an engine, I didn't know what to look out for, didn't have a checklist. I saw an engine that I wanted on the cheap, bought it. If it had a massive crack that split the engine in half, I wouldn't have noticed that either. I'll try do a compression/leakdown test, and if it looks bad, keep the crank and throw it away. Lesson learnt.

Really? Why? I thought you'd just need the flywheel and starter? Do I really have to bolt up everything?

And can someone please illustrate to me how I'm supposed to power the starter?

          What makes you say that?

I would've too, if I knew what I was looking at. Hell, I pulled the head off my old M20, and when I saw it was covered in big black dark flakes I thought my engine had swallowed a bag of coal, turns out it's completely normal.

You don't need the gearbox bolted up. All you need is the starter and flywheel.

^^ What do you bolt the starter to?

                Shorter full threaded bolts.
You are aware that the starter does not bolt to the tranny, yeah?:D

                  RIGHT.

Please look at a transmission photo and report back.

Why can't you turn the crank bolt with oil in the engine to test compression/leakdown? You don't need a starter to rotate a rotating assembly. Valves will open and close...

I was going to ask the same thing. I'm guessing because oil wouldn't circulate properly when you're spinning the crank manually? Out of interest, how much of a difference does it make to get the readings with or without oil, does the engine really get fully lubricated that quickly?

If I have to, I'm assuming I can use the flywheel/clutch/starter/gearbox from my M20 while I still have the M52 oilpan. I haven't got the readings yet because I haven't been able to get the flywheel off my old engine yet (T60 torx bolts, no tools for the job -_-). Also, how should I wire the starter?

I really dont think you should be messing with engines, but, green injectors are fitted to B25 engines and pink injectors are fitted to B28 engines. If your engine has no oil it wont take long to kill some bearings even just spinning it on the starter
