    BenM's M5X/S5X Frankenmotor build

Well after much deliberation of what direction I wanted to take with my E30M50, I've decided to build a stroker motor for it. Mostly for the experience since I have machining experience, but have not built any motors. I have plenty of measuring devices at my disposal (dial indicators, bore gauges, v-blocks, etc.) so that will aid me, but I'll still end up taking quite a few parts to an automotive machine shop.

I've had an M52TU Crank and M50TU longblock for about 9 months, but have been indecisive on what specs to build it too. Yesterday, I picked up an S52 bare block and matching pistons w/ about 120K from a local member, as I wanted to run 86.4mm bore pistons instead of the 84mm ones found in an M50TU.

My plan is to build an M5X/S5X variant utlizing BMW pistons, connecting rods and crankshaft.

    Crank- M52TU - 84mm stroke
    Pistons - S52US - 85.365mm bore
    Connecting Rods - 140mm length

With this combination of bottom end parts, I will end up with a slightly oversqaure engine, with a better rod ratio than an M52, S50 or S52, while still having nearly 3 liters of displacement. Haven't calculated the compression ratio, but it is likely going to be around 10.5-11:1 due to the decreased stroke of the M52 crank, but with the wrist pin being moved upwards 5mm due to the 140mm rods.

The block will be hot tanked, magnafluxed and given a clean up hone. The rods will be shot peened and balanced along with the pistons. I will have the crank cleaned, magnafluxed and polished as well, but will not have it knife edged since this will likely just be a street/track car.

I will dulve into the cylinder head details at a later point, but I am thinking it will be a rebuilt M50TU with stiffer valve springs, a mild port/polish, and either S50 or sunbelt sport cams, depending on the $$ I have left.

I'll also have a spare M50TU block and may build spare stroker M50TU short block. That would utilize an M52 crank, 135mm rods and 84mm bore M50TU pistons and give a 11.25:1 compression ratio, but I'll start another thread if I decided to build that.

Pictures will be forthcoming when I have the time and get the M10 block off my stand. Comments, criticisms, and/or feedback is welcome.

Sounds good man, that car needed alittle more power. Didnt you buy a SC bracket? Any plans with that?

Not sure yet, may throw it up FS. Either that or put the old M50 into my 4dr. DD with a supercharger. Or maybe throw it in the S50 E34 Touring since that motor already has ARP head studs and has a ton of room in the engine bay.

Too many options, not enough time. Are you interested in it?

bwhahaha, thanks man. This will be a semi-long term project, I don't expect it to be completed until next fall.

Did you ever get the cooling issue resolved?

I may just do that. There was a nice V3 unit on BFC a while back, it may still be FS.

Not yet buddy. I'm 98% certain it is the thermostat. I've been busy with work (a 2 minute drive) and that's all the driving I've been doing, so I have yet to do it simply because bleeding the coolant in my driveway won't be fun. Soon enough though. :???:

Quick question, how do you calculate compression ratio?

Sweet build btw, building my motor was a ton of fun.

Thanks man, I'd like to chat about it sometime if you ever have a minute.

To be honest, I'm still figuring it out myself. The short answer is that its a ratio of volume at BDC to volume at TDC. Someone from Brazil over on BFC recommended this combination and figured I'd try it. Here is a good calculator I found with google - http://www.csgnetwork.com/compcalc.html

The issue is trying to find the proper info to input, as well as the stock s52 piston specs.

Hey Ben, I had been thinking of an m50 stroker with m52 crank as well, however I just put the crank up for sale, there is a guy who is most likely buying it shortly, I decided to go 5 lug first. I have plenty of 5 lug questions for you! Good luck with the build!

Ben doesn't come to the BAV show. :( FredK came up but he said that all the rice is not worth the drive. LOL.

If I goto LRP's show this year and it's so haphazard as the last one it will be some time before I goto another one. I miss the large car corral that they had for years on the grass across from the main straight.

hahaha. I like to take the cushy touring for long trips, the supple sport seats are really comfy.

I hear that, they still do it but its not as relaxed as past years.
