How necessary is the alternator cooling duct?

The scoop for the end of the duct doesn't want to sit well and the duct by itself looks funky. Is it necessary? See any problems with eliminating the scoop and duct?

Its not really needed, I have mine hooked up anyhow but I really wouldnt worry about it, If you want to run one and dont like the look just pick up some flexable hose and connect it near the headlight. I wouldnt worry about it too much though

The main reason I've kept it on is to avoid dropping things in the hole. It would suck to be at the track and drop a screw or whatever in there and have to pull it so you can shake it out.

Depends on your electrical load. The e36's had more electrical stuff in general. If you have a huge stereo, heated seats and 100w bulbs you may want it.

thanks guys, I didn't think it was totally necessary and keeping stuff from falling into the hole is the main reason I've kept it on this long.
