5bar aftermarket FPR?

Sorry guys, when I was searching and commented on this thread I neglected to notice which sub-category it was in. I have no opinion or experience on s54 motors.

I'd just use the S54 FPR in the location it's meant for (right next to the frame rail). You can get a basically brand new, "used" S54 FPR with a filter for under $50 on ebay. you can get the rest of the hardware for mounting it on the frame rail from BMW (I'd use all stock E46 M3 stuff). summitracing.com has the cheapest S54 consumables I can find - good quality stuff, too. their fuel filter is $26.50. NGK plugs are "cheap" at $9.83 a peice. lol :)

nice thing about the S54 FPR is it has a built in schraeder valve that you can tap into for a digital FP gauge. I'd like to be able to datalog FP (I have an pressure gauge now but it's not useful while driving the car).

one fear of mine is a decrease of pressure in the line to rail if FPR is mounted remote - but as long as pressure is constant during running it should be tunable

This was my concern. I tried (currently installing) to preserve the stock fuel line coming off the engine. Because of this, you are very limited in where you can put the fuel filter/fpr assembly. My thinking now is to break the two apart as I said before, mount the FPR to the stock S54 line and run about 2' of fuel line to the filter mounted in the transmission tunnel. I removed the fitting at the end of the fuel filter last night and it is a 12mm fitting. My only issue now is the hose barb I have to connect to the 12mm fitting is 3/8, while the rest is ~5/16. Not much of a difference, but different.
