Your best bet is to wait and watch what Josh/Hybrid on BS does with his S50b32 swap.
If your nice to him he might hold your hand through it (he'll do it anyway cause he's that kinda guy).

The S50b32, you know, from the Evo M3/ZM3???
Runs the same systems as the 328.

              RE: S50B32 vs B30

All the S50B32 engines had EWS of some sort. The MZ3's often had EWS III.

The last of the S50B30's had it too.

No, to an obove poster, you can not do aftermarket keys. Please re-read my post, there are 10 unique keys made, 4 handed to the buyer of the car, 6 on hold in the factory to be offered as replacements. If you were to use up all 10 keys, you'd have a problem, and actually need a new set of cylinders for all the locks and ignition column, as well as EWS set etc...

Nearly, the EWS module is produced with 10 matching chips, the chips are stored and fitted to keys when requested, if you use all the 10 chips you have to buy a new EWS module with chips and have it aligned to the engine ECU. Locks dont need touching.
The early S50B30 engines didnt have EWS as the M3 was available from 1993, EWS came in 95.
As has been stated the start signal is not a common type, it is a pulsing type pattern that changes every time the key is read by the module, even if you replicated the pattern you wouldnt be able to use it as once power is cut the pattern changes

Hey thanks! I appreciate the correction...I had assumed that the chips were in keys already, and that you were fubar if you used them up.... good to know. I was told by the dealer that you could only order certain numbers of the different key types, so I assumed that they chips were loaded in pre-made keys. Sounds like you know more on that subject than I thought I did!

You are of course also correct on the rolling codes...since that is not the primary issue with alignment, I usually don't get into that on forums....

Am I crazy in suggesting an aftermarket ECU? Expensive, yes, but saves these hassles...

                          But then again I'm biased...

OK... to be up front, the EWS issues alone are probably not worth going to an aftermarket ECU, we're all just showing off our acculated knowledge.....we like to pontificate and show off, makes us feel important.

However, on the S50B32 it may not be as expensive as you think...
