new to me 24v is a dud..what shal i do

So bought a complete engine harness and ecu and accessories out of a 94 525i. Brought her home and pulled the valve cover and saw the nastiest muck i have ever seen in a valve cover / head. Cams show excessive wear. Oil doesn't seem to have ever been changed :(...

How would yal proceed on a rough thousand dollar budget?

happened to me too. and the bottom end was very worn out. i got a good price on it and half-expected it to just be a block and head, just hoping for a good head. so the head was fine and i rebuilt it to 3.2 liters. if the motor really needs a rebuild, you might be able to do it for under 1k if it doesnt need pistons. good luck...

edit- next time maybe pop the valve cover before you buy the engine! i bought mine over the internet so i have an excuse.

Take the head and oil pan off and take a looksy. If the bottom end looks good you should be able to get the head done for under a thousand I would think.

install it, get the swap to start, then buy a m50 longblock and install that, replace all gaskets then. And stay within $1000 budget.

i got a quote of 500$ for a basic head rebuild

Im in the same situation paid 800 for complete engine and trans, only to find out 1 cylinder is leaking 100% and another like 70%. Apparently a compression test was done -_-

... how do you fix excessive wear on the cams but by replacing them, the bearing caps and the bearing ledge?
                No more e30s for me.

for all the money you're gonna spend you might as well buy an M motor... seriously. but if you can do the work, get m3 internals and cams. bum, you have an M motor.

These motors are a dime a dozen, and 600 isnt really that bad if you got all acc. and obd1 stuff. for 3-500$ you should be able to find a low mileage m52, or possibly a grand might get you a s50 in good nick. both bare blocks/heads and use the stuff you have to make the m52 obd1 or the s50 work in your car. either way will be less work and definitely more power for the money.

you look around for them. heck, you got a m50 with all the accessories for 600$, to a yard, the accessories are probally 70% of the price. There are yards within about 20 min of me that have atleast 8 m50/2's, both e36 and e34 sitting. from bare blocks/heads to full swaps, ranging in price from 300-800$. and dont say you live in the worst place ever for cars. you live on the east coast, drive 45 min, pick up a phone book and start calling yards.
