    Cel 1282 & 1281

    This is a long story.

I have an S50 powered E30. I did this swap mostly by myself and with the help of a friend when I needed a second set of hands.

This is thread on my car.

    http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=107147

My car is a weekend cruiser. About 8 months ago I was coming back from a short drive when the car started acting like it was running out of gas.

It progressively got worse and worse until it died. I was about 1/2 mile from my house. I added a gallon of gas and the car started. All of this happened with the gas gauge showing 1/2 tank.

A few months after this incident I changed the battery (since the old battery was 5 years old and not taking a charge that well any longer). I've been driving the car here and there but not too much. I took it to an autocross a couple of months ago and drove it hard. It ran well, no issues.

Yesterday, I was driving for about 20 minutes when the car started to miss. It was a quick glitch like it skipped a beat and kept running. I noticed a couple things. My idle was high and my tach stopped working (it was stuck at about 3k). I stopped for gas and added about 5.5 gallons and almost filled it up.

I started heading back to my house after filling up. I was about 10 miles from my house when the car missed again. The idle was still high and the tach was still stuck at 3k but the car kept running after the miss. I drove for another 4 miles when the car started missing bad and acting like it was either running out of fuel or missing due to an electrical issue (no spark or no power to the injectors). It died a couple times and I would bump start it (since I was still moving) or crank it over and it would start back up but still miss badly. It also started to hunt for the idle it would idle high at about 2k and then increase on it's own to 5k and back down to 2k.

I ended up making it home and started to trouble shoot.

The stomp test gave me CEL 1282. This is not the first time the thing has thrown 1282. I've tried holding down the pedal steady to clear the ECU (not sure if I'm doing something wrong) but I've never been able to clear the ECU.

I have followed the Pelican instructions of disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes etc. After the CEL 1282 instructions I started the car, shut it down and did the stomp test. This time I got CEL 1281. Followed the instructions for 1281 which ends in driving the car for 5 minutes over 30mph. The car runs fine right now but still throws CEL 1281. The tach is working fine as well.

The engine is well grounded. The battery is fully charged (I started keeping it on a Battery Tender when I'm not driving it).

At this point I'm thinking about getting a new (to me) ECU.

I appreciate input from anyone who has experience similar CEL issues.

    Thanks

Yes, I used BMW brackets to install the ECU in the stock position.

fuel filters, fuel hose, FPR, pump, those are where i would start, in that order. borrow/ buy a fuel pressure guage, and see what kind of pressure you are getting right before it enters the fuel rail

I need to change the fuel filter. It's been a while since I did that.

The FPR and the pump were changed about 6 years ago.

It seems to clear up once I reboot the ECU (disconnect it from the battery for 15 min). It's running great today. I took out twice to run some errands and it didn't miss a beat.

I need to change the fuel filter. I do that soon.

I'm autocrossing it tomorrow so lets see how it runs.
