    DME getting hot

So today I drove my car for about 30 minutes and then it shut off and I smelled that dreded burnt electronic smell. It was my DME. I could barely touch it. After it cooled off a little, about 5 minutes it started and I drove home. It is a green label 405 and it smells like it is fried but still runs. I drove it again for 20 minutes and no problems.
Why is it getting so hot?

That's not normal, I mean they get hot but not that hot. Try grounding it/mounting it?

I have heard of them just sitting in the glove box before. Tomorrow I will see if a
318i m40 has the right mount.

      Any other ideas?

If you mount it using a metal bracket of any description, the bracket will assist as a heat sink.
I don't know if it will be enough in your case, but the DME does get close to uncomfortably hot normally.
The odor of burning does not sound good.

No it doesn't. It smells fried but it still runs. I have an extra e34harness and dme that I will swap out next week. The wired thing is it still runs. I will make a bracket tomorrow. I save metal strips for just the occation. There was a mouse living I'm the glove box with the dme in storage but I checked the while harness before trying to start it.

Ok got it. While checking my plugs to see which cylinder was misfiring I found a melted coil on #4. pics tomorrow. Swapped it out and put another dme in and it runs great besides at idle but parts are in the mail

Nice to finally solve the issue.

                Gotta luv those rodents.
They are very good at burning down Aircooled Porsches.
