Seems like unmetered air getting into the system. I had similar issues and couldn't find the leak until I pulled my ICV and found a small rip in the hose.

hoses are new, so i think those are in good shape. maybe the icv is just bad. To bad i dont have a known working one to test.

Bought a Peake scan tool for my car, and it doesn't work. Now I don't know if the scan tool doesn't work or if something is wrong with the diagnostic port. Is that even possible to have a bad diagnostic port?
I don't know anyone else with a BMW to test it on atleast an obd1 BMW.

Did you run switched power to pin 16 on the diagnostic connector from the e30 side of the c101? You need to do this in order for the peake scanner to work. I used the O2 sensor heater power (pin 6 on late model 6 cyl c101's) connected it to pin 22 on the x20 side.

Well bust out a DMM and check for 12V between pin 16 on the diagnostic connector and ground with the key in the run pos.

I set it to dc 20 and it read about 1 volt. The pin on the side of it, which I wasn't surenif it was 15 or 16 read about 10 volts.

Sounds like you got what you paid for.

Look harder for a vacuum leak. :)

Well you had better count the pins starting at 1 and going up to 16 so you can tell which is which to make sure whoever made your adapter didn't fuck it up then and put power to 15 instead of 16 if you want the Peake to work.

gregslow made the adapter so im pretty sure he knows what hes doing, But the way i counted it out it seemed like pin 16 had 1 volt and pin 15 had about 10 volts. Any other reason the scan tool wouldnt work?
the whole point of me buying the adapter is because i suck at it, and didnt want to get into it.

Well if you don't have ~12v at pin 16 that IS your problem with the scanner!
x20 pin 22 goes to pin 16 on the diagnostic connector.

Do you have your O2 sensor connected? After I drove my car to the exhaust shop with no O2 hooked up I was having idle hunting and dying issues that seemed very similar to a vacuum leak. Resetting the DME after having the O2 hooked up cleared it up perfectly.
