    91 316 to 325 24v

So I started my swap today and holy sh*t; everything is so tight and hard to get to. A total PITA!!!! It'll be worth it though.

Background: 91 316 euro spec, 94 525 engine(tu), trans, brake booster/master cylinder, appropriate mounts, etc.

So here are the problems I've ran into so far: The shift linkage is to long by about 2 inch so I have to cut and weld it before I go to much further, The driveshaft is just the wrong size but I expected that because I'm using a ZF tranny... So I'm trying to find a 328 driveline or send the one I have to the shop to get CUT.

The good news is the motor's in and the master cylinder out of the 525i worked! So not bad for the first day. Tomorrow I hope to have the engine ready to fire up, the linkage cut and ready to weld, the driveline out of a 328, in or the measurements ready for the driveline shop, and everything else ready so i can just put in the parts i might be waiting for. Definitely possible to get done in the next two days or so.

So the 525 manifold doesn't line up to the 325 exhaust, bummer. I guess I could pull the mani off a 325 but I think there might still be some fitment issues so I'm just going to cut and weld the exhaust it into submission.

The driveline is the only other real issue causing this thing not to be on the road. I can't find a 328 driveline anywhere (and I'm in freakin germany!) so I got the measurements ready for the driveline shop and I'm going to get it "fixed" on monday.

After those two things I should be good! I need to search the web for 91' 316/94' 525 wire diagrams to get the harness taking care of. Anyone have a good source?

Hey OTT! Good luck with the swap!
Will you be legalizing it or do you guys just drive swaps around as-is?

        Thanks!

I don't know yet. I'm probably not going to legalize it. The inspection office is pretty easy going... What does it take to get it legalized?

Not much been in Afghanistan and Spain for the better part of this month, not sure what my schedule is coming up. I think I'm flying thru in the early part of August. Talk with Eric here he has done a few swaps as mentioned and he's local to you.

He's USAF so TUV is not an issue, it has to pass base inspection which is not as stringent as TUV or say MOT.

That's cool. Do you guys get USAF plates or special german ones?
I'm a regular ol' US citizen so I have to abide by local laws and shite. Though I could get a US 325 title and plates and they could kiss my butt.
                    Sorry to threadfu*k btw.

We now get local economy tags with the major town you live in. Before it was Black and white US style tags then we got DE style tags with a made up town now it normal tags.

                        So that answers that question.

I've been talking with Eric a bit the last couple of weeks. He has been giving me some good sources for things. His car is under the knife right now at Ralf's shop. I think its getting a S54.

Got my driveline back from the shop today; perfect fit thank god. I was worried that I didn't measure correctly. I finished my exhaust too. I was a PITA to get the sh*t mocked up but it turned out ok. Now I just have to get the right serpentine belt and see if she crank over. Well not crank because its doing that now but START. So with some luck I'll be driving my swap tomorrow.

The porject took a bit longer than I thought. I think it was about 25 hours total which seems like a lot but I did it completely by myself and ran into some road blocks on multiple occasion i.e. driveline, exhaust, wiring parts, and shifter linkage. Its all squared away now so... I know what to not do on the next swap. I'll post a couple pictures when its actually running.

From what I've read I need a 1390 to 1425mm belt for the water pump, alt, and crank. Is that right? We'll see anyway...

                              The 1400 in 6PK1400 means 6 ridge 1400mm right?
