    Shift linkage Getrag 260

I read on here that there are differences between getrag 260s. I am using the 260 (deep bell housing) with the m50, into an e30 318i manual. What linkage do I need? Do I need this black support plate?

All I can find about this on r3v:

Are the linkages the same? I find them to have different p/n for some parts.. Ie the selector rod: 25111221657 and 25111220838

That black plate is the shift carrier. It's the early version. The later version is a smaller aluminum rod. Same function, different design. You need it, it's what holds the shifter. without it, you won't be shifting. I'm not sure how well that will work in an m50 swap as the trans gets rotated 12 degrees. It should work, but you'll need to bend or cut/weld the selector rod like everyone else.

You can't switch to the late style carrier because your trans doesn't have the mounting ears for it.

How is that early shift carrier gonna bend that 10 degrees so it will still bolt to the body?

It's not going to bend. It does the same thing as the aluminum carrier. It just gets turned a little bit. It mounts to the body at the rear at a single point which acts as the pivot point, just like the aluminum carrier. It's a horizontal bolt going through a bracket which is free to spin. I'm not 100% sure it will work, but I see no reason it wouldn't.

Ah, I see. I though it was more directly bolted to the body, I have never worked on one.

Nope, 2 bolts to the trans, and one bracket that goes through a hole in the body.

            Part number 4 here:

            And part number 16 here:

The bolt hanging out both of those parts is horizontal, and connects to the body. So it should be able to spin upon that point.

              carrier

I used the sheet metal carrier on my m50 swap with no problem I had to add a spacer to the rh attach point and just bent my shifter over slightly.

Yeah...cool, as I have one 260 that is sheet metal, and has the lowest mileage of the 3.

If it has the mounting ears for the later style shifter, you can use those. Only the early 84-85 cars didn't have those ears. The later 85-86 models had the ears and the holes for the sheet metal shifter.

Mine was a 2/86 car with the sheetmetal carrier, that I was able to convert over to the later style. Some people use an E36 aluminum carrier, though I don't think it matters much which one you use.

Like R&D Man said, you can probably keep the sheetmetal one, it just may take some tweeking and preloading on the rubber isolator on the back.

                      OK, so this one:

has the ears. Correct? Thanks for the help!!!

What do I need to do differently for the m50 swap for deep bellhousing tranny? I have M20 clutch, flywheel, starter.
