Best/cheapest/most reliable etc. way to 300hp

Well, the title pretty much sums it up. Within the next year to year and a half, I will be attacking the power problem with my car. I currently have a couple of e30's (91 318is and 88 325is). The body is shot on the 88, so I will intergrate them into one car with the following parts I already have, most of which are already on the 88 325is. FK springs with bilsteins, all new suspension bushings everywhere, some urethane, new tie rods, short shift, Top end perf. regrind cam, chip, CAI, m30 afm. So I have addressed most areas that are easy to improve. Now I'm left wanting more power.

My goal is to have approximately 300hp or 250 rhp or something close to it. I've read the comprehensive swap thread for m50/s50/52 and it sounds like a good way to go. However, to get to 300hp, it sounds like one would need an s52 obd1 with cams, chip, intake exhaust and very good tuning. Cost would probably end up being 6-7k. So, what other formulae are available for 300hp. I know forced induction/turbo is a good alternative, but I don't know enough about it.

Please discuss, the pros and cons of the s52 route vs. turbocharging including costs, complexity, reliability etc. Thanks.

PS Since this doesn't fit neatly into this category, I will double post it in the forced induction forum also. I wish it could appear both places and concurrently update itself. Mods, if so can you do it? Thanks.

Basically turbo is the cheapest way. Whether your turbo the M20 or an M50 is still just a matter of cost.

I have the S50, love it.
    Im now E30less.

Ditto, after owning a supercharged S52 in an E36, I love my NA S50 in my E30...

I got a Euro S50B30 in mine, I´d take it over turbo M20 any day.

Cheapest way to 300hp I´d say is a 3.5 M30 swap and some NOZ.

After that M20 turbo running 10psi or so
M50/S50/Euro S50 running 300hp is going to be alot more expensive.

Pickup a complete 2.5 M50 for $700-900....find a 3.2L longblock ($3000-3500?), swap the OBD-1 from the 2.5 onto the 3.2 and you've got a 3.2 that will put 220 or so to the wheels. Slap on a Euro HFM, chip and exhaust and you'll be making 230 or so whp.

Why 250whp? Any idea how fast an E30 is with a relatively stock S50/2?

I myself have been having the same goals for my 88 325is...

My plans have been to use a S38 from mid 90's M5 in order to break the 300 hp goal...It's costs a pretty penny for these motors but I feel its gotta be worth it

I hope you have a DEEP pocket. Initial cost of an S38 is pretty steep, nevermind maintenance. Especially if you ever need to rebuild it.
Also, that motor is very heavy. Granted, it would be bad-ass to have that kind of power in an E30, especially with that engine. But that's A LOT of extra weight over the front wheels. It would probably mess up the weight distribution pretty bad.

ya the only way a s38 wouldnt completly screw up a e30's weight distro is to do some seriouse work and make the s38 basicly mid engine.

I remembering seeing pics of a mid engined s38 powered e30... that must be fun

Yeah you can, it's called the tornado (as seen on TV) :D

But seriously, the cheapest way to get 300hp would probably be a M30 with a home made turbo kit, or as I've been told, an LS1 swap
