Not sure if that is cheapest - what does a ls1 with tranny and custom driveshaft run?

Cheapest? I say a turboed m20 - that way you don't need a different ecu, fuel injection, tranny, shift linkage, driveshaft, motor mounts, ect...just a turbo, RRFPR and a some plumbing. right?

Best would be a super charged m50/s50 (300 HP?)

Most reliable would be a bone stock motor or any quality make/model that would give you that HP number your looking for.

I think 250HP (crank) would feel great in a e30. 300 RWHP you have to start to make a lot of compromises (ie, you really can't have it cheap, and if you do it won't be reliable - and if you want it reliable, it won't be cheap!!!!)

    my 2 cents...

You could swap in an S52 and then get Active Autowerke's new twin screw supercharger and push 330 at the wheels.

I agree :) Lightweight, compact, sits far back in the engine bay....already over 300hp....relatively cheap to modify with heads/cam etc.

If it wasn't such a no-no in some purists minds, someone could make some decent coin making motor and tranny mounts, or a kit for this swap. Kind of like granny's and rx-7's.

Turboing the M20 is probably best if all you want is 300hp.

what would be more reliable the turboed m20 or the s50 swap?

Depends on how either of them is done. At the same $ investment, the turbo M20.

If your setup is reliable, you can get more power out of it.
