    ECU stolen WTF now?

So i just found out that my MAF and ECU (DME) have been stolen off of my 1997 M3 thats parked in the front of my house.

I have been planning to run the s52, and ZF trans in my 89 e30. I was going to stay OBD2 with the s52 because i had the complete wiring harness with the EWS system and the ignition, as it was all coming from the same car.

My question for all of you is: Since the ECU from my 97 M3 has been stolen, does this effect using the same harness EWS and ignition in my e30? Am i able to just buy another ECU that was put in the 97 M3's? and what ECU was put in this year of M3? Thanks.

It'll need to be aligned by a dealer or someone with the electronics. It'd be cheaper and easier to convert to OBDI.

        very contradictory....

        1. only someone who knew what they were after would steal an ECU and MAF...(not merely someone after a little cash)

        2. someone who knew what they were after wouldn't steal an ECU from an EWS equipped car?!?

Seriously!? Theres no way around this? I was relieved to be able to stay OBD2. this would suck if i had to convert.

No. I'm assuming it was the guy that came to buy the Diff from me when i first posted the car as parting out on CL. Whoever it was I'm disgusted that they're connected to a BMW in any way.

I assure you that both the MAF and ECU are gone from the car. And no where to be found in my garage.

As nrubenstein stated, if you get another OBDII ECU, you'll need to have the EWS aligned by a dealer or independent BMW shop with the proper scanner.
It's not very hard to do, but it just sucks that you'll have to tow your car in to have it done.

Maybe they didn't know the difference between OBD I and OBD II? Either way, that's fucked up.

Theres a local shop not far away. What exactly needs to be taken in to the shop? Wiring harness and new ECU? Or the whole car?

just realized the stuff was stolen today when i rolled the car into my garage. I've been at school since september. Guy came a looked at parts in august. My dad found the car cover messed with about a week or two later. Dont know what good a police report would do. But i'll look into it tomorrow.

You will need to be able to plug into the system as if you were reading the fault codes. I don't know if you are able to do that with the harness out of the car. It might be as simple as providing a power and ground to the harness to power the ECU, but I've never had the need to try it out. You may have to bring the whole car.

Not all shops will have the ability to do this, so check with them before towing your car over. I don't believe any of the generic scanner tools can do this. You need a tool like the Autologic or GT1

You can send me a replacement ECU and I can flash it to run with no EWS.

It may just have been somebody random BTW... people know that the ECU is the most expensive part of a car.

What would you charge? If you were to flash it would i have to use the same ignition or would i be able to get rid of that too?

And yeah i thought of it being a random person, but my house and where the car was, wasnt i high flow area of traffic. i live in a small neighborhood, on a small island.
