E30 Getrag 260 mated to E36 M3 Flywheel and Clutch????

    Hey guy,

About to do a 24v swap and am going to use my E30 Getrag 260 until it blows up.

The motor I am looking to buy has an E36 light weight fly wheel and performance clutch already mounted up.

Will the Getreg 260 bell housing have any clearance / operation issues with this E36 “style” flywheel / clutch set up? Or are the basically the same?

Should the E36 clutch splines engage / mesh with the Getrag input shaft correctly?

    Thank guys

Yes it will bolt up no problems..but why not go right for a zf transmission so you dont have to build a custom mount along with the shifter linkage will be 15 degrees to the right

My e30 is currently an automatic, and before I decided to do an S50 swap I had already bought the parts for a 5 speed conversion.

So I think I’ll just stick with the 260 until it explodes and then go for a ZF when I have a bit more funds.

I just spent a junk ton on a completely rebuilt low mileage S50 with every E30 swap part needed north of the trans.

You can pick up a zf for 250 in some places..sell the 260 for 175-200 just trying to help you so wouldn't have to rip it all apart again in 3 months :)

What year and model should I be looking for a transmission out of?

          Use an e30 M3 drive-shaft?

            If you are using a 95 m3, 96-00 e36 e46, and a 96-99 M3 transmission you will have to use a drive shaft out of an E30 M3, 98 M3 (U-joint type only), 87-88 325E or 96-98 E36 328.

Also I was not trying to make you think you could not use your 260. By all means use it if funds are low. I was just trying to make sure you acknowledge that you might be replacing a transmission down the road sooner or later.

I'm using my 260 in my swap. Only a few of the bellhousing bolts line up (makes me a little uncomfortable) and the shifter linkage has to be modified. The custom brace is easy enough for someone to make, it's not too far off. Just remember that the starter has to match the flywheel

I don't know where you guys are getting the idea that the G260 is weaker than the ZF from, by all accounts it is stronger. A G260 can handle 400whp all day long.

Don't be surprised though when only the 4 large bolts on the bellhousing line up, the 3 smaller ones that would go into the oilpan on the m20 do not lineup and cannot be used.

I am running a getrag myself with a JBR 10lb flywheel, and e36m3 clutch/pp combo.

Just remember you must use the getrag 260 pilot bearing, and yes it slides right into the back of the S5x's crank.

I'm using a g260 and stock 96-99m3 clutch/fw/pp. I get a bad grinding noise when I slip the clutch sometimes. Not sure if flywheel is possibly flexing enough to contact bell housing or something like that. It's definitely a tight squeeze. If I ever have to pull the tranny I will look for evidence of interference. It's been like this for a year or so and if you learn how to drive it you can never make the noise, but when I let other people drive the car they tend to be cautious and slow with the clutch which can make it happen. Not bad enough to change tranny's because of it, but it's a mystery I want to solve for peace of mind. Some day...

Sounds as if your pressure plate is hitting.

yeah, I don't know what that guy is talking about. You aren't going to break a G260 behind any N/A BMW motor. Unless it was already near death.

Let's get one thing straight no one ever said his 260 would break. I was saying you might as well swap the transmission for something a little better.

actually what you said is he'd have to replace it soon, which implies that it will break. ;)

Soon is a month to a year..but lets not clutter his thread over nonsense..Maybe it came out a little different through the text..But either transmission would work!!!
