    SoCal questions

Hey guys, I am just finishing up an OBDII m52tu swap in WA and I just accepted a job in Redondo Beach, CA. I have lived in WA my whole life and was just wondering how hard it is to pass emissions in LA with a swap like that. Any of you guys know the ins and outs of stuff like this? I am hoping to keep my car registered in WA as long as I possibly can get away with.

Hear check out this link, gives you an idea on making your swap legal in cali

Your swap can never be legalized technically since it's OBD2. What you need to do is run OBD1 and BAR it as an M50. How long is your stay? Determine if it's worth the trouble to get it BAR'd or not.

Providing the OBD-II set up is fully functional (i.e. it has a MIL and functioning diagnostic port with no trouble codes), what's stopping him from getting it BAR certified?

My mistake. I was thinking of euro/JDM engines. Most people switch to OBD 1 to try and fool the refs since it's easier but if you have a full OBD2 swap and it passes inspection, you should be good to go.

To the original poster: Are you running all 4 O2 sensors? smog pump? proper OBD2 CA legal cats? there's a reason most people smog it as OBD1.

Man, I totally got sidetracked and haven't been back to this thread. Anyway, yeah I am running secondary air pump, dual cats, 4 OBDII sensors, and basically everything OBDII. I don't know how long I will be living there, but it should be for a few years. With it being OBDII are they going to get way stricter? Or do they still apply similar restrictions as OBDI?

            Here's my build thread.

i would also like to know. this is the exact swap i a thinking about getting in my e30.

so we could do the obd1 swap and have it BAR tested as an m50?
so there is no way we could say its an m52 with obd1 because it didnt come stock?

Anyone? I don't want to get down there and have them not let me register my car because I am from another state and don't have CA cats or something stupid like that. It will pass any smogs test in WA

I pass my s50 as a stock m20. I have passed twice. Most people don't know teh difference in how they look. I have s50 obd1 cats.

There you go, find a smog guy who doesn't know or cares about the visual. M52 can never be BAR'd as OBD1 because they never came that way in the original cars they came from. So they disguise the engine as an M50 or S50 which did come with OBD1.

Yeah I was wondering if you could smog it as an earlier model. I have no experience with CA emissions crap and have never lived in a county that does smog, so I am a green as they come in this area

if everything is factory from the donor car, cats, o2 sensors, fuel evap is connected right, stock exhaust, ect, you should pass the smog ref visual... I wouldnt go through the trouble as some of these guys follow everything to the letter such as placing the evap canister in the same location as the e36. Smog it as an m20 car and if someone says anything then you have no choice but to go to the smog ref.
