Joe, I just finished the head rebuild and my car smells rich also. But, it's always sort of smelled rich. Short of plugging it into a reader of sorts, it's hard to say.

The exhaust ports open could be running your O2 sensor a bit "lean" and it's trying to compensate with more fuel? I'm not positive on this and would love to hear what other's have to say.
    Need a part? PM me.

If you have no charcoal canister you should PLUG the fitting for it at the throttle body, not run it anywhere.

If you're running no o2 sensor, GET ONE.

Just thinking out loud - By running the fuel evap hose directly to the intake you might be drawing vaccuum and raw fuel into the intake. no?
