In a nut shell, you remove the oil pump and drive a pump off the crank with a belt. Then you can cut the pan to almost nothing, you just need room for a pick up tube and for the crank to swing.
I like you plan of cutting the oil pick up. But how are you going to get your capacity back?Originally posted by Matt-Bhey does anyone know anyone who gets upset and makes electronics?Comment

In a dry sump setup works similarly to stock. Your oil is stored in a separate container instead of your pan and you can generally place it in any location. Youll need an external pump rigged up to pump the oil from the container into the original pickup. On the other hand, the length that is cut off of the oil pick up tube depends on how much you cut of the pan. Basically, The inside bottom of the an needs to be a specific distance from the bottom on the pick up tube. Make sure your weld or the welders welds are air tight because itll be a problem if not. Have you ever tried sucking water from a straw with a pinhole in the side? No bueno.Comment

Im sure you can do that as well, the only problem I can foresee is that the stock e36 pick up tube bends in the opposite direction I believe? Itll probably be easier to just mark and cut the e34 pick up tube to be sure.Comment
