How quickly have you guys done your 24v swaps?

As much as I love the smoothness and simplicity of the M20, no matter how many times i freshen up the gasket, how perfect my compression is, how smoothly it idles, there's always another problem. That being said, I know these cars are not Hondas, but I need something a bit more DDable as I'm going to college in a couple of months and working on my car simply won't be on top priority anymore.
I'm going to have the money for a M50 soon enough, from an E34, but I will only have access to a garage for probably the weekend (3 days). I'm good at wiring so the wiring aspect shouldn't be too hard, but I've never pulled a motor before.
That being said, I want to know how quickly have you guys completed a 24V swap, from start to finish?

On my swap I pulled the motor on a Monday, dropped the motor in on Wednesday, had the car running on Saturday, and the the car home that Sunday.

Two weeks. Working on it a couple hours per day after work. It was the first time I had even pulled a motor. But after about 30-40 hours, motor swap, diff swap, 5 lug swap and e36 rack were on, and I was rollin.

Took me like 2-3 weeks. Only because I started the project without having the parts in hand. If you're going to do this, make sure you have everything ready. Should probably take you less than a week. Was my first time taking outa motor as well and first time doing anything related to an engine. I've ony done oil changes and minor stuff. Wiring harness, I got everything right the first time. I was surprised.

P.S. Make sureyou hae on of those engine levelers. It's a PITA without one. Ask me how I know.

Engine levelers? More info needed on what that is haha.

And yes, I'm going to make sure I have all the parts before I actually go to my friend's house and do this.

On my first swap, all I had was a garage and a cherry picker. Pulled the M20 Friday night, had the transmission swapped to the new motor that night. Saturday morning installed the M50 and had it started an hour later (only a few connections start it...)

Radiator, driveline and other stuff took a few more hours and I was able to drive it Saturday Afternoon. Sunday I spent most of the day with the exhaust.

                    Monday drove it to work...

Have all your parts and tools together and it's a snap.

Awesome, that's what I want to hear dude.

I wonder how much Cherry picker rentals would be. Probably more than the cost of an M50

                        THIS!
i've helped swap an m20 from one car to another, then pull that same motor out in order to swap in a m50(m50 was "in" within two days) then took about a week to diagnose two problems, one the engine wasn't grounded, two the fuel lines were reversed...not my car btw.

also i helped pull a motor from a e36, took 1hr. cut every wire and hose leading to motor, trans was already out when car came off trailer so it was pretty easy.

but yeah, being able to change the angle of the motor while on the lift is very important, you dont have to pull the motor from top...drop both subframes and then swap motor while subframe is out, then put subframe back in.

This was my brothers first car (it was gold too) and wow was it bad, I saw that pic and it made me laugh (that and we still have the 351W out of it, currently being built up into a 410 for a street rod)...

back on topic it, my swap took the better part of a weekend to get everything in, and another day or so to wrap it all up (clean up wiring, mount up the cooling fan and some relays, build the exhaust, etc...)

Honestly I think I may have spent more time stockpiling parts and getting everything setup (wiring harness, new gaskets, swap out sensors, etc...)

Awesome guys, this thread gets me very excited.
I'm looking much more forward to the reliability of the M50 hahaha.

Depends on how well you know what your doing (overall) and whos helping. Get 5 or 6 friends over to help, even if their hangin out most of the time, they are there if you need a part picked up or a hand with something.

Getting the engine out & new one back in shouldnt take more than a couple hours really..
