    e39 m52

Question for anyone in the know. Can the m52b28 from a 528i e39 be swapped as per the 'usual' m52 swap? Reason being i might be able to get the car cheap and fully running (body damage) i just dont know if the parts would be the same as the usual e34 M52 swap.
Basically I dont know if its worth buying the car for the engine, then sourcing all the other parts as per a usual swap or If any of the e39 parts are similar to the e36 ill need to get.
Worse case, does anyone know if once removed, the m52 from an e39 is the same as one from an e36, mounting/wiring/trans ect?
The donor is an Automatic, but so is my e30. Any problems going Auto m52 to Auto e30? (besides the flame factor...)

    How cheap is the E39?

I would have thought the wiring side of things would become more difficult.

M50 + M50tu are becoming cheap in Aus now, like comparable to US prices, especially in Sydney so unless the E39 was super cheap I would stick with the tried and tested M50/M50tu route.

In North America at least the m52 which came in e39 5 series cars was the m52TU it is double VANOS so it is easier to stay OBDII to keep it working although it is possible to have double VANOS work on OBDI (ask hoveringuy for instance).

There is no x20 connector so splicing into the body side wiring is a little more difficult.

If you stay OBDII you will have to deal with EWSII, I'm not sure if there are tuners who can delete the EWS in that DME or not so barring that option you will need all the EWS related components from the donor car.

That said the all aluminium block would make this quite a desirable engine to have.

      Good luck.

Yep, it can be done with some differences in the wiring. Mounting, transmissions and all the usual stuff is the same.

It will be a little more bother but you'll save around 22kilos with the aluminum block.
