You may need to keep a rag over the VANOS unit or it will spray oil out of the vent hole.

I had just rebuilt and installed this one so yeah that will happen if the vanos is full of oil lol

That was pretty cool. My Vanos solenoid is on its way out :(

Solenoid is usually a works/doesn't work affair.

I also found that if the seals are old you may need a large air compressor to support the flow needed to test. Probably wouldn't work with a 3/4 hp/ 2 gal compressor....

(that could also be because I have 20 degrees of advance on the M54?)

Well im having this problem where when im in the range where VANOS should be activated sometimes it feels like a lazy pig and other times it just pulls like crazy. And sometimes in the middle of a pull I can feel it switching back and fourth. Not really sure whats up.

How are your seals/aluminum ring inside the unit? Have you had a glance at the actual shaft? I know mine is almost exactly like what you're describing where one pull it's "Holy fuck me sideways that's a lot of fast..." and the very next minute it feels not so "healthy" or "eager". I know for a fact that my actual VANOS "splined shaft" was/is suspect as it had a far amount of noticeable to the touch marring on the "smooth but scratched" surface.
                        Need a part? PM me.
