I had just rebuilt and installed this one so yeah that will happen if the vanos is full of oil lol

I also found that if the seals are old you may need a large air compressor to support the flow needed to test. Probably wouldn't work with a 3/4 hp/ 2 gal compressor....
(that could also be because I have 20 degrees of advance on the M54?)

How are your seals/aluminum ring inside the unit? Have you had a glance at the actual shaft? I know mine is almost exactly like what you're describing where one pull it's "Holy fuck me sideways that's a lot of fast..." and the very next minute it feels not so "healthy" or "eager". I know for a fact that my actual VANOS "splined shaft" was/is suspect as it had a far amount of noticeable to the touch marring on the "smooth but scratched" surface.Need a part? PM me.
