s50 oil in intake manifold - source?

Removed my throttle body to get better access to clean my icv valve. Noticed oil in my intake. Not just a film, enough to coat the pad of ky finger a few times.... And thats only directly where the tb is. Noticed blackening on the tb past the butterfly.

Pulled the icv. End going to the manifold was black. Whole thing was gunked up. Tube going to the manifold was coated in oil. The tube going to the intake boot was dirty, but not really any oil.

I know a common problem is blowby.... Bit the car isnt smoking at all. If i really wind it out to 6-7k, friends following have said there is a little something coming out. Never really low on oil though. What could be the problem? The s50 seperator is in the valave cover, right? Is there a part to be changed or does this not fit my symptoms? I have a cold start issue im trying to fix. Starts fine, but wants to stall at idle for first few minutes. Engine runs rough, shaky for first 5 minutes or so. Then seems ok. Idle wobbles occasionally pushing in clutch coming up to lights. Not a lot or consistent though. Recently replaced o2 sensor and spark plugs. Cleaned hfm. Anyone have any thoughts?

I don't know about 24vs, but on M20s if you have a bad enough vac leak it will suck oil into the intake through the valve cover breather.

These guys make a good oil/air seperator. Might be a cheap solution for now. They are having issues with their site right now. I know there are people on tech that track one of their setups with great results.

It does sound like you have a vac leak, however the s50 has a PCV valve on the crankcase vent tube. What does your crankcase vent system look like? There should be a valve inline with the tube coming off the valve cover before it goes into the intake elbow.

Thanks for the responses, guys. The pcv valve? I need to inspect it i thought it woukd be more substantial than thar plastic piece that plugs into the valve cover. I had a bad vacuum leak a few k miles ago, but there is no way that oil is still from that. Last time i went hunting with some carb cleaner, didnt find any leaks.

I really dont want to bc of the rats nest, but it sounds like maybe i should pull my intake and redo everything? Ugh, parts get expensive and i just redid all the rearend bushings, driveshaft etc less than a month ago.

You guys mean #1 as the pcv valve?

Wow, did not think that was a valve of any kind. Thought the pcv assembly was under the valve cover. The obd2 engines have that big external pcv/ccv.

The OBD1 VC's dont really have a real PCV and thus always have oil pooling in the manifold issues. Ideally you want to run the OBD2 Cyclone seperator. I weld on a pipe to the E34 dipstick to utilize the OBD2 seperator.

From Adrians description it sounds like he's referring to #4 in the realoem diagram. Looks like it pops into the underside of throttle boot:http://www.rmeuropean.com/Part-Numbe..._E095124A.aspx
would be nice if someone could inspect theirs or blow through it to see if it an actual valve or just a vacuum connector. My car is obd1 converted and I didn't know about this part

So, i still need to check for vac leaks, but otherwise nothing to worry about? Ill have to investigate putting a catchcan or obd2 pcv in there.

if the OBD1 engine doesn't have a "real" PCV then it could just be a vac leak

I believe that part goes into the rubber intake elbow and is needed because the hose going to it is smaller that the hole in the intake.

Do you guys with OBD1 engines actually route your PCV back into the intake?? I have a hot air intake instead of the original boot, so I just left it out and routed it to the bottom of the engine. Obviously i should get some kind of catch can, but I'm just curious what other people have done with it.
