if the motor is assembled and from a running vehicle, there is no reason to tap the head and risk getting scrap in the cooling system.you can flush it out, but thats annoying.
My S52 swap engine happened to have a 3rd factory port on the head with a plug installed that allowed me to plug and play the rear ward coolant sensor but not all S52's have this.
to further complexicate things:
M50 non vanos and obd1 vanos engines have ports in the head already
SOME m52 and SOME s52 have ports in the head already from the factory with a plug.
many m52 and many s52 do NOT have a second coolant temp port in the head from the factory, and this re-configured sensor would be a plug and play solution if the installer wants to re-route or delete the throttle warmer setup.
