FUBARED something in the clutch (now with PICS)

makes an awful noise but still drives and shifts like normal. With the rear wheels off the ground and car in neutral, the driveshaft would not turn at all by hand. Soooooo....

Hopefully its just a toasted TO bearing but I've been reading about the pressure plate coming apart on some people. What kind of clutch set ups are you using with the M20 flywheel? I haven't pulled mine apart yet but it sounds pretty bad; one option is the UUC performance clutch. I'd like to keep my lightweight M20 flywheel and starter but will replace that if needed.

Motor is a refreshed S50, 3.5 intake, headers and TRM chip. So 260? 270? crank hp.

    suggestions?

I make similar power. On a stock clutch the rivets failed on the clutch itself, not the pressure plate. Upgraded to a Clutchmaster and it's been fine since.

    What clutch are you running??

if you want an OEM clutch designed for the engine output the S50/52 Original clutch is VERY durable; its dual mass but realistically does not weight much more than m20 single mass set.

        S50/52 clutch will fit in G260 also - pnp item to your m20. I used a 100% OEM S52 clutch+fly set with my S54@ 8400rpm redline + alpha N tune (low 300's rwhp)
        OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Z4 non powered steering rack fits e30

thanks. I'm running a stock M20 stuff with my zf trans. Single mass flywheel lightened with stock Sachs clutch and stock pressure plate. Hopefully I can get confirmation tomorrow of what actually failed and report back. Hopefully it is just the clutch disc?

Never heard of Clutchmaster but I will look into them...thanks.

the s52 I bought has a very good clutch and fly set/ 60k on it only, so my stock 90 325i trans will fit fine when using the S52 clutch, fly,PP? I didnt know this, please confirm;) thanks! I

yes, the G260 (e30 325 trans) will accept the S52 dual mass flywheel and clutch. One of my clients has fitted this-

You should use the S52 E36 starter attached to your s52, as your late model 1990 325 may or may not have same starter style as e36 (some do some don't) - and the m20 unit is larger (wont fit dohc engine setup)

clamping force will go UP, and hydrolic pressure would be best adjusted for "feel"
e34M5 clutch master cylinder is larger and can be fitted if desired, you could also look into compatible larger bore diameter slave cylinders (s52 unit seems different geometry, but M30/s38 G260-6/g280-5 one will probably be same as G260 dimensions just larger bore)
              OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

                here's the culprit...and the result.

Also my slave cylinder was actually broken (rod sheared) but still in place amazingly enough. It got me home but probably wouldn't have gotten me out of the driveway again!

You know you have a good wife if you wake her up and she comes down to the garage to take pictures of your broken car parts on her ipad...and doesn't complain. ;-)

Looks like the pressure plate exploded.

broken plate straps, only way they happens is with crappy down shifting

I snapped straps on my spec pressure plate.

If they were broken, and not bent, they just plain failed. That's how mine were.

If they're bent and broken, wicked downshifts are the culprit.

I looked at the other straps, one was cracking/ripping but the other was intact. None of them were bent.

New Clutchmasters clutch went in today, everything is back together except the slave cylinder. Local parts store did not have one. Also need to re-attach the steering knuckle to the rack......I ended up dropping the subframe with the motor and trans attached. There is hardly any room in there!

I'll get back to it Monday, got a weekend of boating to do!

FYI - If you ever get a custom exhaust made, having a bolt-out centre section is absolutely key!!!!
