I've worked a good bit with Chevies. My dad and I are currently working on a 5.3 iron block Datsun. I know how big the Chevy bellhousing pattern is.

Maybe I'm overestimating the size of the E30 transmission tunnel.

Just some quick google searching and I'm getting weight ranges of 380-430 for alu block Ls1s, and 400-440 ish for M62s...

I know Ls1s have sleeved blocks, and M62s don't, and it looks like the block itself on the M62 is smaller, which may help with the M62's heavier heads.

Quite a bit heavier heads, I would guess. Considering the M62 has 4 cams to the Ls1's 1 cam, I'd say the "myth" of the M6x's being heavy engines is pretty much squashed, if these weights are accurate. Curious to compare the weight of an S14 to these weights...;)

        Garey

EDIT: Quick search says 350lbs, but doesn't say "fully dressed", so an M6x weighs approximately 50-90lbs more than an S14, but with roughly the same length. Hmmmm... not such a bad choice, now...

          4cams vs 2 you mean ^ above, not 1 for ls1 ;)

I'll weight these bare and with all accessories to put all these myths behind.

LS1s are OHV - they have one camshaft, and pushrods.

Really Jean? I'd expect more from you ;)

Pushrod (OHV) motors have one cam in the cylinder valley. The pushrods go between the cam and the lifters.

                paint sucks

HA! My bad, for some reason I thought they had ONE cam per SIDE with push-rods!

Told you the LS1 is lighter! :p

An s14 weighs around 240 lbs, so your looking at a minimum of 110 lbs extra, also the s14 trans weighs maybe 60 lbs, the m60/2 trans definitely weighs more. Even though it's not really any further over the nose, you WILL feel the 110 + lb difference when it comes to handling and braking, especially on the track.

The 5 speeds look tiny, though. Like, shorter than an S14 trans.

I would agree that you may feel it on the track, but for a street car, the huge difference in torque will make for quite a lively E30. There are quite a few guys who are tracking their V8 E30's and I've not heard them say anything about a nose heavy car. Springs and sways can help offset that quite a bit. And the 5 speed V8 trans is the E36 M3 trans with a V8 bellhousing... I doubt it weighs more than 60lbs. Now the V8 6 speed is a different story entirely... it may weigh close to or over 100lbs... it's a truck transmission, lol! It's all up to the preference of the owner...

I totally agree, an m6x e30 = street demon if you have a proper tire and suspension set-up! :woowoo:
