A 240 sits without any mods? Which is a more reliable, better transmission though?
Who is the strongest Getrag 220 Vs Getrag 240

My buddy has a s50 in his 318is, which i believe is the 240. Its sits perfect, I didn't believe it because I thought only the e36 trans sit flush. However if I end up running the 240 I'm probably gonna have to change the diff, and I'm probably gonna have to run a different clutch set up than my stock m20 clutch setup that I had plans on running.Comment

Check the Bentley's manual for the gear ratios between the 240 and the 260.
They are almost identical.
The bottomline is that the 240 and the 260 can use the same diff ratios like for example 3.73 without any noticeable issues. I know because I have built and driven both.
The 240 does provide a perfect fit for a 24v BMW engine, meaning no tilt but it is the weakest transmission out of those mentioned here. Again, I know this from experience. For me its the only BMW transmission I have blown up and I've done it twice.
With all that said, if you have a 240 in a stock M50 swap it should work well and it might last since the power output is not that high. The S50 should also work well if it's stock. The 240 is cheap and plentiful.
For ease of swap install, I would rank them as
1) 240 no change to orientation, no diff change, no trans brace modification, can't remember the driveshaft, you should be able to figure out the shifter linkage between a 260 and a 240 (assuming you are pulling an M20)
2) 260 change the orientation, no diff change, no driveshaft change (assuming you are pulling an M20), linkage modification due to orientation, trans brace modification
2) ZF tied for 2) strongest trans, requires diff change to something like 3.25, no orientation change, no trans brace mod, requires drive shaft change
For cost of swap install, I would rank them as
1) 240
2) 260
3) ZF third because cost of the ZF used is probably the highest out of the 3, diff change not required but recommended, driveshaft mod
I have run all of these transmissions using a modified M20 flywheel and M20 clutch and pressure plate.
Final thoughts
1) 240 is a good choice. Its fits the engine because the M42 has the same orientation as a 24v engine and it fits the E30 because BMW put the behind M42 powered E30''s but it is the weakest of the 3
2) 260 another good choice. Require more mods than a 240 but its stronger than a 240.
3) ZF is the strongest. I think its the best choice for anyone that plans to do performance mods that will increase hp & torque. Correct orientation and slightly higher cost.Comment

I ran a 4.10 behind my S50 260 E30 for a little while. It will work but that gear ratio drove me crazy. I ended up moving back to the 3.73 which in my opinion is perfect.
I autocross the car so the 4.10 was too low for the S50 which was another reason I wanted to change.Comment

so i have a 220 and have been researching them and apparently they are rare and sought after... i cant see why but from what i have been reading ppl like to bolt them up to m/s52s... anyone else have any input on this elusive 220 gearbox?sigpic
Who`s attention, and why do I have to pay them?Comment

Just to confirm - which diff (importantly, small or medium case?), driveshaft and shifter linkages are you using?I just got done putting my M50 on the green E28M5 engine mounts and OEM E36 engine arms last week. The engine and 240 trans sit perfectly. The OEM trans brace doesn't have to be modified in any way. In neutral, my shifter is exactly straight.
Makes me happy. PO made a shitty setup with fab'd motor arms so I had to fix that after trashing the M20 engine mounts on track days.
I've got an E30 318iS with 240 gearbox in at the moment which will be transplanted shortly...Leo.

I bought an M50 swap and it has a 220 behind it.. Im gonna probably run the stock e30 260 and use the altered crossmember, that way its stronger and i dont have to get a different driveshaft.. 220 seems like a weakling from what Ive read (im ditching the m50 for an s50 I just got)
I read about a few people who had trouble lining up the 260 bellhousing bolts with the E34 pan though.. is this true?Comment
