S50B30 Euro swap - OK to move the pressure accumulator??

    Hello,
Have a question regarding the little pressure accumulator that attaches onto the VANOS system on my S50B30 motor.

The original position of the accumulator put it in the way of the E34 oilpan's dipstick spot, hence it needs to move.

The original position for the VANOS accumulator is at the front of the engine, but provided I make up a new hardline, is there any reason why I can't move it somewhere else? I have found a spare bolt hole towards the rear of the block. Attached below is a pic of the accumulator in this new position.

Is this cool? I can't see it being a problem.

    Thoughts? Input appreciated

    thanks

As long as the hard line has the same I.D. and isn't (much) longer I say it's fine. I thought the s54 had it on the exhaust side.. is the S52b32 different?

      Hey,
      Thanks for the reply.

The logical part of me says it will be fine; it's simply oil travelling a short distance in a passageway. I suspect it needs to be extended another 30% overall length.

With regards to original orientation of the accumulator on an S50B30 euro, see the above pic where I have the accumulator to the right of the engine mount? The original spot is basically the same spacing from the mount but on the left side of it. It's a shame as its directly on top of the dipstick hole of an M50 E34 oil pan.

      thanks

Can you just move it to the Exhaust side like a S54?

I remember it had good clearance and I actually had to move it slightly (3" inboard) on my e36 to clear the AC compressor bracket

Anything is possible, I would suspect that moving to same side of the block results in a shorter run.

Also my car is RHD and headers sit tres close to block to clear steering.

          thanks!

I'm building a rhd e36m stateside, have done other rhd cars as well so I'm def aware of packaging constraints.

The s54 accumulator routing seems a little cleaner on exhaust side than on the intake, so many things there.

Too bad you are not local and could try fitting it, I have the s54 setup hanging out on my shelf!

              Haven't ever looked at a 3L, but I a 3.2 and now have an S54. Some thoughts....
              1. The S54 system is different and wont work. It uses banjo bolt on top. The S50 uses a very specific bubble flare that is difficult (nearly impossible) to reproduce.
              2. The accumulator is fairly heavy for its size. It NEEDS 2 brackets to support it. I ran it in the stock location for awhile and ended up fracturing the hard line at Ofest at Road Atlanta.
              3. I think due to the above bubble flare issue (per Alex at ABL- I think the company that made that spec bubble flare is English- the
vanos was built by Rolls Royce- is now out of business), I wouldn't go down the road you are going. I don't think the length increase is particularly an issue. Just realize if you do what you are saying, the flare will be an issue.

              Good luck.

                thanks for the replies.
interesting to note about the unique bubble flare.
I must admit I didn't pay particular attention to it when I took it off originally. I was only aware of 37 or 45 degree flares.

Hey just FYI, I found a workaround.

                  I had an "AHA" moment...
A little bit of bending of some tube, a couple of spacers and some judicious bending of the dipstick tube.... and we have success

Nice bit of clearance, I can even run both P-clips too, which is great

Dip stick fits in there quite nicely

No need to move accumulator on a Euro S50 with an E34 M50 oilpan... provided you do some massaging
