Pistons are be nicer ; lighter as smaller bore.
sides are coated. The e46 pistons got fancy coating on the skirts.
Stroke is much longer. Bore is smaller.

Smaller bore seems to allow the hg to hold more boost as the bigger bores have less space for sealing.
This having been said my fav engine (s54) is Oem 87mm bore and has almost no thickness between
cylinders. :p
S52 is 86.4 bore
S50 is I don't know bore
M50 and m54 are 84mm
