Transmission Problem: Fifth gear pops out...

Hello guys. I have a s52 engine with speed transmission. Maybe you someone here has experienced the same problem and knows a solution. While driving after shifting into 5th, I let go of the gas a bit and 5th gear pops out. What could be the problem here? thanks in advance for those of you willing to help...

very common problem with ZF boxes, they are cheap enough, just swap it out for a good one.

Sounds like it's time to do your shift pins and detents:

I just did mine while I had my ZF out of the car; very straightforward and the repair kits are cheap.

        '91 318is - OBD-II S52 swapped - E30 M3 5-lug - 5x120 BBS RC090 (E39 Style 5) - TCK D/A coilovers 550/700 [SOLD]
        '87 535i - Vacuum brake conversion [SOLD]
        '93 525iT - 5-speed swap - 320k and counting
        '09 328xi - 6-speed

I don't know BMW transmissions, but i know Toyota ones! Check the syncros too!, they can cause these "pop-outs" in gear.

Detent pin. May as well do both at the same time. I did, ordered from Bluntipoo. About a $30 fix....much cheaper than replacing trans....

Assumed since he's using an S52 and that's what comes mated to one.

I have the tools used to fix the detents and the pins. I would be willing to work out sending them for rental fee. I just replaced the same parts on my 5 speed because of the same problem.

How hard is it with the trans in the car?
Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

next to fucking impossible. I did it but never again. It would less hassle to drop the subframe and do it that way.

On a ZF it is impossible. You don't have a fingers width between the tunnel and the trans.

Like I said above. Not hearsay, I did it...
