Picked up myself an s52 motor. Obd1 or keep it obd2? What's the most common thing people do to swap it in e30? Tnx

Depends on how complete it is, there are dme services and options to stay obd2, so if you have most everything already, why go through the extra hassle?

Obd 2 would be cheaper if you have everything, but obd1 will give you more power and be much more simple. I say obd1 is better and less hassle/

I have a complete car 1998 m3. So I do have all obd2 stuff and ecu. I heard about ews and if I decide to stay obd2 then do i have to keep it? Another thing, this particular m3 has automatic tranny, would that be an issue with wiring? Thank you

2 o2 sensors are better because they track exactly what each bank is doing. And who says you have to run the OBD2 intake manifold?!

OBD1 does NOT give you more power. This is a urban legend with roots to defending what individuals run. I am not biased to either, I have one car with each. And one with no obd at all.

                Moore's law states the obvious.

OBD2 DME advancement in bran results in a more powerful and smoother powerband.

Converting an OBD1 engine to run on OBD2 is an upgrade, only in BMW world has there been such a big following of this backwards conversion process. In other makes modification conversion to OBD2 is popular as an upgrade to engines delivered from the factory with OBD1 (Toyota Supra Turbo MK$, Subaru STi).

more O2 sensors = finer resolution tuning.

The advancement in technology of the physical sensors make the DME choice a no brainer for me. OBD 2 sensors themselves were updated to be more accurate and allow better mapping for ..... MORE POWER.

OBD2 vanos computing power/control is more accurate than OBD1 simply due to sensor advancement. (crank and cam position sensors). The brain itself is also smarter, newer.

The OBD2 cats (M52/s52) are often uses as upgrade for obd1 e36 M3's.

Sensors of the S52 are more ideal to run the S52. This was designed by the factory. Same reason that small details of the S52b32 make it a improvement in durability, power etc over a s50b30US, the camshafts are more balanced, the Crank position sensor was moved internal to a sealed environment, the cam sensor is proprietary to allow more resolution to run the Vanos more effectively, the HFM has been updated to a better version, the additional emissions gear (air pump) actually does not reduce power as they work on cold start. Air pump is good for your health, lets the catalyst work better and you breathe in less crap from your own car when parked in traffic.
