is swapping s52 in hard if I have m50?

Like the title says, i have an m50 now, will it be really that difficult to put in an s52? Can i keep the same wiring harness if im going to keep the OBD1 intake? do i need a new ecu? what else would I need?

I'm a noob and would like to get some confidence built up before I get started this week :)

direct swap, just reuse your OBD1 stuff like intake, 525 oil pan, etc on the S52.

      Go obdII

You will be glad you did. Better computer and you can order the wiring harness or a good price

Easy as pie. I just did this recently on my car. Had an M50 and purchased an S52.

You can keep your harness, pan, obd1 intake, obd1 throttle body and maybe a few other small items.

I'd make sure to get a chip tuned for the S52 though. Also, you have a choice of either keeping the OBDII valve cover or swapping to OBDI. I kept the OBDII valve cover because the coils weren't as old and I like the all black look.

SWEEET. you dont know how happy it makes me. i thought i had an m52 and knew it would be an easy swap, then i found out i had an m50 and got a little scared.

Also, yeah, I'm definately getting it tuned. along with pulleys, headers, intake and the obd1 intake, i think i'll be making some nice numbers

          300hp seem far fetched?

                300hp is dreaming on a stock head+cams+bottom end s52b32 us. unless your s52 is actually a s50b32 or S54b32.

CAMS (Evosport/Sunbelt) + all high dollar (non-ebay longtube headers+manifold+intake side) + OBD2 custom dyno mapping s52 MAY get you 265-275hp. Would possibly have to limit the vanos travel pending cam choice.

if your target is 300hp in a single throttle M50 family engine then you need a Alpina 3.4L kit for the s52. Those are 300hp legitimately, a s52b34 from alpina delivered in the B3S late run cars.

honestly, i would have considered it obdII and i had EVERYTHING that i needed to do it. problem is that i was in a rush to get the car ready for a track event and all of the obdI stuff was already there. i didn't want to spend any time learning how to get it wired up right.

maybe in the future i'll consider it.

Don't listen to these guys, there is NOTHING wrong with running an S52 with OBD1 swap.

Yes. For the price to get there you are better off keeping your m50 and turboing it.

                        Yes and no.
                        Does it work? Yes.
Is it similar to running your M50 off a Motronic 1.3 setup? Yes.

Everything is wrong with a S52 + obd1. Throwing away something newer and smarter to run something older and dumber at a higher cost.

totally illegal for emissions, downgrading brainpower and entire diagnostic system is not an upgrade.
                          .
costs more as S52's do not come with any OBD1 sensors. OBD1 sensors are not free, nor is a real s52 map for Obd1 brain.

Individuals trend towards being afraid of wiring and handling the less complex obd1 system themselves, obd2 installations are for shops and diy-ers with good logic and spreadsheet and wiring diagram reading skills.

There is no shame in admitting:

"I can't wire things worth crap" or "I'll burn my own car down to the ground melting wires"

People selling copy chips defend obd1 like champs/chimps. similar to the boot leg movie/rap music "market" in random ghettos.

in a pinch I could probably get a s52 to run with m20 1.3 moronic.... Perhaps I should to avoid wiring entirely and run even more primeval brains??
