    s52 oil leak

i have oil leak coming from the back of the engine somewhere its definitly not the head or valvecover gasket, im pretty sure its not the oil pan gasket and i just changed the rear main seal and the o-ring over the crank sensor below the starter, a friend of mine thinks its may be that plate that sits around the rear man seal , and suggestions ? and has anyone changed this ?

could be the plate for the rear main, or could still be the rear main. Very easy to get the seal a tad cockeyed and still have leaks. can also be the flywheel bolts if you did not use sealant on them

Rear main seal or the plate, they can be troublesome.

I have the same problem. Changed the rear main , now it leaks like the exxon valdez. Gonna pull the tranny round spring time to fix it.

I dont know if it makes a difference, but i think i had the cork gasket and changed it to the metal gasket. Cant find the cork one anywhere.

Yea there seems to be two designs for the rear main. Theres a new(er) comes with a plastic guide to set the seal in, it can be tricky to set in there. Might want to remove and re-install the seal to make sure its not pinched somewhere- better to take off the entire unit and seal it back up as a unit without having to buy a new seal.

The rear main seal is actually sold as a "kit" from BMW. It comes with a NEW plate, gasket, bolts, and rear main seal already installed in the plate. It works much better than just replacing one gasket/seal.

11142247867 "set of covers" is the best way to go.

              Looks like this:
