i have oil leak coming from the back of the engine somewhere its definitly not the head or valvecover gasket, im pretty sure its not the oil pan gasket and i just changed the rear main seal and the o-ring over the crank sensor below the starter, a friend of mine thinks its may be that plate that sits around the rear man seal , and suggestions ? and has anyone changed this ?

I have the same problem. Changed the rear main , now it leaks like the exxon valdez. Gonna pull the tranny round spring time to fix it.
I dont know if it makes a difference, but i think i had the cork gasket and changed it to the metal gasket. Cant find the cork one anywhere.1985 325e M50TU(Sold)

Yea there seems to be two designs for the rear main. Theres a new(er) comes with a plastic guide to set the seal in, it can be tricky to set in there. Might want to remove and re-install the seal to make sure its not pinched somewhere- better to take off the entire unit and seal it back up as a unit without having to buy a new seal.-Jay

The rear main seal is actually sold as a "kit" from BMW. It comes with a NEW plate, gasket, bolts, and rear main seal already installed in the plate. It works much better than just replacing one gasket/seal.
11142247867 "set of covers" is the best way to go.
Looks like this:
