    Flywheel & Clutch?

I've been reading mixed things about the flywheel and clutch setup.

If I use the ZF tranny from an S52 car, what is the best setup for a daily driven, performance minded car?

I've read I can use the M20 single mass flywheel (and maybe shave it), starter, and clutch pack.

Or I can use the S52 dual mass flywheel, starter, and clutch pack. I can get this for about $100 right now.

    Which way should I go?

I went with the s52 dual mass flywheel, starter, and a stage 3 Southbend clutch and couldnt be happier. I have plans for turbo though, thats why I went with the SB. From everyone i've talked to they said that just replacing the s52 clutch with a new OEM one works great.

I have heard too many stories about pressure plate straps breaking on m20 clutch setups used in swap cars to reccommend them myself. I personally am using a JBR 11lb flywheel and unsprung s52 clutch/pp (the one meant for a dual mass flywheel). It works great.

It pains me to believe that somebody would go through all of the trouble to do one of these swaps and would use a stock 25lb dual mass flywheel.

i have never used the dual mass clutch in any of the 4 swapped cars i've had. i just liked the idea of shaving off some rotational mass for cheap and used the m20. usually just bought a new clutch kit and all was well. i was running 500+ whp through the m20 singlemass with uuc cerametallic clutch, and it never once showed signs of giving up.

From the research I've done there is a reason the M5x/S5x was designed to use a dual mass flywheel. Much of it is due to harmonic balance. The M20 can get away with a lighter flywheel because it has a heavier harmonic balancer on the front.

It seems everyone I know that swaps a single mass or lighter flywheel onto their 24v either has low end drivetrain vibration and/or eventually breaks their clutch disc or PP straps.

I'm not saying it can't be done or there aren't people who have been running them without issue for years but it seems I see more people having issues including myself.

Personally, the only way I would use a single mass or lightened flywheel is if I removed the crank and balancer and had it balanced as a complete rotational assembly.
