    4.10 to 2.93 question

the 4.10 (through research) is a small case diff, will i be able to use a medium case 2.93?

i understand that you can swap covers/flanges for swapping out rear ends and my assumption is that the cover and flanges off the 4.10 wont work for the 2.93. what all will i need to make a medium case 2.93 work if it is applicable at all.

I'm not 100% sure, but I am doing the same thing in my car.
I know you need the cover from any medium case e30 diff.
You'll also possibly need different CV shafts?
On my 318is that had a 4.10 they seem to be longer than the medium diff cars.

I guess I need to know what I need to make the 2.93 bolt into my m52 e30 and work.

After more searching it seems as though some guys are stating that medium case diffs bolt right in while my past research had indicated this is not the case

              It does bolt right in!
If you have a complete medium case diff it will go right in.

I'm not positive on everything else that is needed but I should definitely look haha

You need the medium case diff itself and e30 medium case cover and output flanges. The M42 small case cover and output flanges are different.

EDIT for clarification. If you're getting the 2.93 out of an e30 it will bolt right up with everything. It's only when you get a medium case diff out of an e28 or similar you have to start swapping covers and output flanges.

So if it's a medium case 2.93 out of an e30 then it will just bolt right in no issues.

If its a medium case 2.93 out of an e28 then I will need to source medium case e30 flanges and cover and then it will bolt right in?

this is indeed exactly correct. the flanges on the small case diff stick out a little further so the dimension between the flanges of small and medium case diffs are the same.

any medium case e30, and 6 cyl z3 diff cover will work. other than an e30 m3, 4 bangers came with small case diffs and 6 cyl cars came with mediums. all e28's here in the usa came with mediums. (not sure about m5)

so while the medium cases are larger they have shorter flanges thus making them the same dimension as the small cases from the 4cyl cars?

                              Exactly correct.

And for what it's worth, as per flyboy's post, e28 M5s are also medium case.
