I've read a couple of places the booster/master cylinder should be from same mfg'r. Car is 89 I and has Girling MC. I'm leaning towards using the ATE 944 booster for my swap. Will the Girling MC work or do I need an ATE MC? Different mounting, seals, stroke or? Any comments about this combo ? Thanks

You can use the stock Girling MC with the ATE 944 booster. The master cylinder mounting is identical.
In my opinion, it is the best feeling single booster setup and the stock stepped 22/17mm MC is also a logical master cylinder choice. People often "upgrade" to a 25mm MC, but honestly, I don't like the shorter stroke, as it complicates heel-toe shifting because the larger difference in pedal height between the accelerator and brake pedals.

I also use it, although brake performance is there, you have to hit the pedal harder than you are used to to achieve the same effect...which should be expected due to it's smaller diameter. Switching to this MC allowed the intake mani to *just* fit; and I sanded/ground off the last 2-3 fins on the intake to maximize clearance.

just installed my ate 944 booster with oe e30 mc, it is a tight fit, also had to shave down those last few fins on the intake. But it does fit, and has a nice pedal, sligtly more effort, but I like. Modifying the rod is super simple too, ten minutes with a cut off wheel and a 5. dollar harbor freight cutting die, and you're good to go.
