Put a charger on it and grounded it in multiple places, no luck. I will short starter tomorrow. In my original question I asked about difference in starters, the parts places show different starters for 325e and 325i but both have m20s. Which starter do I need for 240 trans and M20 flywheel or are not all M20 flywheels the same. Note: Mine is a single mass

    Thanks

Starter needs to match to the flywheel, not the transmission. I used the single mass out of my 325i...as well as the starter...with my zf

      maybe this link will help?

wow, awesome article! so slovik, which starter are you using? i didnt see it referenced in the thread, maybe i just missed it or something, but like e30rapidic said, use the one that matches your flywheel. i'm not sure how many people make this mistake, but i seem like it would be hard to do considering the difference in teeth on the flywheel.

You know Swift I really don't remember at this point but I'm sure I will be pulling it out this weekend so I'll let you know. The flywheel is a single mass that has been machined down for this application, I bought it from a guy on this forum and I just assumed that all single mass M20 flywheels are the same, is this not correct. I see the single mass flywheel used in the 325e up until 4/86 are there others and do they differ in tooth pattern?

            Thanks

i was more going off of how e30rapidic had used his m20 flywheel with starter and a zf trans. ie. you wouldnt be able to use the e36 starter with the m20 flywheel and visa versa.

figure out what starter you have and post it. the more information you give at the beginning will always make it easier for members to diagnose and help with the problem

                It Started!!!

She started right up and runs perfect now, the problem was not the starter it was the loose nut behind the wheel. In my effort make everything connect and look correct I forgot the single most obvious thing and it just dawned on me when I went to check the voltage at the starter. I forgot to connect the biggest fucking wire on the whole car, what a dumb ass, forgot to connect the big red starter wire. I would however like to everyone who tried to help the helpless one and especially 328 Junkie who did my harness and made it all so easy. Thanks and Sorry.
