    Cold air intake options

I'm hoping to start on the M52 swap for my touring over the coming weeks, I need to figure things out so I can get it all sorted before the shell gets a full respray. I have nothing to go on or get me started except a M50 intake and the AFM. I was hoping to run with the stock airbox but this gets in the way of the top rad hose. So I'll need a cone of some description and a heatshield also.

This is my 1st time using a cone, the obvious cone contender is a K&N filter but I'm sure there are others. What other filters are available and better if there are any for not to many dollars! I've been looking at Dave-F kits and found he used a RU-2590 K&N filter. If anyone has used this particulat one, does it fit in behind the lights? I've read it's best not to bolt the filters to the AFM directly, how much hose/pipe should be use or can be used?

For a heatshield I was going to make something that butts up against the under side of the bonnet with a rubber/foam gasket on the top edge. I then found out about Castros airbox which looks like a neat solution. Another option was to run the filter down through the little panel to above the brake ducts, or at least drill some additional holes for more air.

I need a intake elbow on the TB also, Turner does a nice one but shipping to Ireland is very expensive :(

Here is my setup, K&N Apollo routed through the drivers side headlight. Used a sub port to finish off the grill. Takes care of needing a heat shield and gets the filter off the AFM.

Thanks guys for the pics. What filter (model) are you using Acehye559? I'm liking the black expansion and water tank, did you use normal paint on a plastic primer? I was thinking of doing the same when I do my conversion.

I'm to keen on losing the front light, probably very functional though I'm after oem look, reckon a few extra holes will be drilled to allow air in from under neat, or make a duct from the aircongrill slats into a enclosure.

I used a K&N RB-0910 filter, and yes I used plastic primer and matte paint.

I'm using a e34 airbox from a m50 powered e34. Works great, looks clean and snorkel goes right behind the driverside headlight.

Do you have ABS? If so, post up pics.

May get some dislikes but I'm using a specter flex tube from the maf with the cone where the high beam would be. Abs is there but isn't hooked up right now.

nope early model, no ABS. Doesn't an e36 airbox fit on abs equipped cars?

I have some shielded 3.5" and 3" intakes if your interested:) can do 4" ducting for the 3.5" ones too.

Here are pics of my m52 with the e34 box with ABS. Tight but it fits between my m42 radiator and ABS pump. Not sure if this works with other radiators, I'm sure somebody else can chime in on this.

That wouldn't work for my application either :(

                        Damn rad!

I've been doing a little home work, going to diy a 90deg elbow between the TB and AFM, then a 45deg 80mm diameter alloy pipe with silicone coupler to fix it to the afm and then a cone on the end of the allow pipe.

I'm undecided on a K&N or Pipercross filter. I've found a pipercross one rated for 325BHP that will fit onto the alloy pipe. I haven't found a suitable K&N one yet.

Will Cruise work with your 535 setup? I see you dont have the cruise actuator.

I like the use of stock BMW parts, but I wont be using an m42 radiator so this may not be for me.

                          nice job though

somebody mentioned e36 airboxes. Will this work? anybody have pics?

Yes, cruise control is doable with the 535 airbox. I have the actuator installed now. I'll try to snap a picture and post it up when I get some time.

I've managed to squeeze the standard e36 airbox in, it's a bit tight but fits.
