    s50 + boost or.....

Im thinking about swapping an s50 in my 318i. How hard is the swap? Could I be able to boost it? Around how much do rebuild kits go for? Thanks

    EDIT: or m20+stroker kit+turbo kit?

If your car isnt breaking, you're not driving it hard enough..

as Carrol Shelby once said "A good driver never experiences turbo lag."

Swap is easy. you can boost anything. what are you rebuilding?

    use the search function.

Oh, my fault, I should have explained it a little better. I would be rebuilding whatever motor I chose. And the reason I ask if I would be able to boost it is because of clearance issues, Does the s50 motor have any swapped in the e30? TIA

m50 based motors can take quite a bit of boost. My friend is running an m52 in his e30m3 with 14 psi on a twin turbo setup. Hes making 430rwhp. The only thing hes done as far as "building" the engine is install a low comp head gasket.

there is a 45+page thread about swapping an m50 based engine into an e30- read it... you'll learn alot.

Its a sticky at the top of this sub forum.

PS I dont know of any affordable "rebuild kits," but I'm in the process of rebuilding one myself. You can get one from bavenging, but they're $1500... include new pistons and the such, but most people don't need new pistons, and you piece what you need together alot cheaper. I'm working on a write up- when its all assembled and the project is finished, I'll put part numbers together so everybody knows whats up.

S50 + twinscrew would be a whole lot more manageable, and keep the power within reason. All of the AA turbo kits use a bottom-mount turbo set up and would not work in the e30 without a ton of custom fabrication.

Addis, did you ever figure out what the different color crankshaft bearings meant?

                  bingo.

but i'm going to suggest you just order from pelican parts or something- they sell them in a complete set, regular or oversize... its alot cheaper than buying them individually.

I think a built NA motor would be more overall fun.. I don't really get the point of a 500whp E30, unless you're going to use mickey T's or something..

I am a fan of the turbo so I vote for the turbo

besides, a turbo will get a lot more attention than a supercharger, though if you have unreasonably high hp it can be more dangerous (tires breaking free bc of boost)

I say start small and turbo your m42 and have some fun, then when your m42 dies you can sell it and its turbo kit to somebody else for some $$ and start a m50/20/s50 swap/rebuild/get ready for turbo. Then when thats done you can slap the turbo up there too for more fun, and by the end of it all you will know a shit-ton about tuning bmws.
