Pardon my ignorance, but what's the go with oil coolers in twin cam 6cyl E30s? Doing a bit of searching around, I can't even work out if E36s ran oil coolers. Also, in all my searching around for the twin cam conversion I don't recall reading anything about it. Perhaps an oil cool isn't necessary, but my 325is already has one...so I may as well use it if possible.

It will cost you alot of money, and unless you're building a high hp engine, you probably won't need it.
www.vacmotorsports.com has a variety of oil coolers compatible with m/s5x engines.

Funny you should ask. I've been told you have to have a euro oil filter housing but if you look at the M50 housing it has a flat bolt on the side of it that does nothing. I think you could pretty easily make it work but you want to make sure the oil flow is right.Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

the euro oil filter housing and the s54 housing is the same part number. you need to tap one outlet for the vanos unit but its straightforward. just order an s54 casting and go with a mocal or earls cooler and some braided lines. i think i have 600 into mine give or take. im running an earls 25 row. its definatley needed on the track. i was pushing 280+ degrees without it and even under the most sever conditions ive never went above 250 on the track after installing it.
ps, im not sure the place i have my sender is the most accurate but regardless its dropped 30 degrees with the cooler

Or maybe no one has thought of it.....it's possible.
Your not going to blow the cooler. The only time coolers blow is when the oil can't get through the filter in time and that would not be a problem here.Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

You obviously missed part of my point. A thermostat allows the oil to bypass the filter or even the cooler all together so the cooler doesn't blow. Thus my not getting threw the filter comment.
The "good ones blow"....then their no good. Thin is not really that big of a deal. Just the fact that you have an oil cooler at all is more important then if it's thin.
And yes they do blow if you don't think about what your doing. Or you made a mistake.
You can add an aftermarket thermostat right after the filter housing so pressure doesn't build and the oil can warm before going to the cooler.
I probably will do it unless I find it simply wont work for one reason or another. But as of now I have yet to see anyone on the net say why you can do it with the US version.
And why do you need to rev to 7200 before the oil is warm? That's just common sense.Last edited by joshh; 11-14-2005, 10:22 AM.Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

josh is on to something... this idea has been floating through my head for quite some time now, I've just been too busy with the other aspects of my engine to put too much thought into it.
And yeah.... seriously... who the fuck revs their engine to 7200 before it is warm, espceially running thick ass oil? Talk about fucking your lifters man.

Yes but there is a valve (thermostat) that cuts it off from the pressure of the rest of the oil.Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.
