    No tach or speedo?

My odometer doesn't move either, so I assume my odometer gears are shot? Fuel and temp work fantastic, and do proper incremental changes. My tach and speedo are dead as nails and the economy gauge doesn't move from 40.

Where should I look? I've tried a few clusters and all have the same result. Ideally, I'd like to get my euro cluster set out of my '86 325i import working, but at this point I'll take anything.

    Cluster is out of a '91 318is, car is a '88 325is, engine is a '92 M50NV and I've got a 6cyl cluster coding plug (since my euro gauges don't have a coding plug, I guess it assumes 6cyl?)

Nothing has been hacked apart that connects the OBC to the dash? Mine was hacked up and missing grounds. This ended up shorting out parts of the dash so I had to sadder new cables inside the cluster, was pretty precise work. But my euro cluster is awesome.

      nope, OBC works perfectly too?

As long as they are wired properly (ie, worked before) then your board is probably fried somewhere. Common on the old style clusters. It is a tad odd for both the speedo and tach to go out though. Its usually only an electronic speedo failure.

where do the signals come from? and how do I verify that the signals are actually sending? I can't wrap my head around the idea that both clusters shit the bed if the end gauges both work perfectly

Tacho should be a soild black wire from dme. (I'm winging this right now, it could be black/white stripe) Fuel rate for your econo gauge should be black/white. They should both be in your c101 based on it being an 88. The harness itself has more than 1 black and black/white just to give you a heads up. I don't have the pin number memorized.

The speed signal is a direct connection from the speed sensor in the diff. I believe it is on the white pin connector on the cluster. I just checked one of these the other day on dads vert. If you have signal on the input then something in the cluster is bad. This will also cause your econo gauge not to work if you have no speedo.

ok, I wanted to update this - mostly out of frustration
so, my friend is parting out his '89, I think PERFECT - I'll grab his cluster! (his works fine)

I plug it into my car, and it doesn't work. I mean, at all. The tach and temp gauges kinda flicker real quick and it's dead as a doornail.
I put in my test gauges and none of the gauges work on there either, wtf?

So, I've got a known working cluster, but my gauges are still dead? and now my test gauges are dead too?

don't know how, but blew fuse #10, that explains the no gauges thing, replaced it and my fuel and temp are back on all three clusters.

HOWEVER - all three gauges (including my known good cluster) all don't have speed or tach, so something is definitely wrong

Got the same problem all gauges work perfect except the tach and ecometer. Swapped three good working tachs still no works. Think part of the SI board needs resoldering.

If I have time or remember I will try and find some power inputs and look at the ETM for the cluster diagram to see where you should be pin checking.

Normally, I'd think that too but this new cluster is literally brand new and came out of a running, good car where everything worked an hour earlier :(

That would be amazing, I don't know if it's the frustration but I can't keep my concentration trying to read the ETM lately. :x

Well mine worked before I took it out to paint the needles. And after I put back on it didn't work. Also took out the obc wiring, since I didn't need it. But I was told the obc has nothing to do with the tach.

Also just got the check engine light and is throwing code "speed sensor signal not present"
                        Car runs great regardless

                          this seems relevant:

I don't live by my car, so I'll have to wait until this weekend to give it a shot :(

Further reading leads me to believe it's actually my harness, pin 9 on an 88 would be speedo signal to the DME, right?
I can't find where in the ETM it actually SAYS that, it conveniently leaves that part omitted on the connector description.

As my understanding, on an '88 with the 13-button OBC it should be:

Speed sensor on differential -> Pin 9 on C101 -> DME -> Cluster -> OBC?

I want somebody to confirm this.

yes please! i am having this same problem right now too. all guages work except speedo tach and economy. i made sure that i had the wiring at the c101 correct for engine speed output, and vehicle speed yada yada. someone told me that you need a direct wire from power to the back of your tach. can anyone confirm this too?
