I've been PM'ing nando because he's the harness wiz - and he says:

-speedo get's it's signal from the diff
-tach comes from the ECU (1mm black wire)

the speedo sends a speed signal to the ECU as well (1mm black/white wire)

I'm not sure how/where to test the signal from the differential, as I don't know where the input is for the cluster

ok, got everything working - the differential sensor works, but the wiring fell apart in my hand trying to unplug it. Got a new plug off a parts car, wired it in and had speedo... tach was pin #9 on the E30 side, it needed to be run to point #20 on the e36 side.

Now my fuel, coolant temp, tach, speedo all work!

Hopefully this helps somebody else too, because the information was non-existant in my searches.

the connector fell apart in my hand, not the sensor itself but rather the plug - be sure to test the differential sensor, it alternated between open and closed with ~300 resistance when ohm'd out

My plug was also cut so I replace it and even replaced the sensor. Tach still not working :(

              Update:

My cluster board (not the SI board) was fucked somewhere that's why tach wouldn't work. Replaced the board, now everything works.
